Kolkata Knight Riders under Ajinkya Rahana have yet to win a game in this season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026). As they are set to fight it out with CSK on Tuesday evening, a troubling Varun Chakaravarthy injury update has emerged.
The three-time champions have just a solitary point so far in the IPL 2026, and have lost to the Mumbai Indians, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Lucknow Super Giants already.
Despite losing pretty pace bowlers, KKR were considered the team with the strongest spin department with Sunil Narine and Chakaravarthy in their ranks. However, the spin-twins have scalped just two wickets combined.
Although the Carribean’s bowling stats are still noteworthy, the current T20I-ranked two bowler has been having a serious struggle with form since the Super 8 stage of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Moreover, he has leaked 79 runs in two innings at an economy rate of 13.17.

Varun Chakaravarthy Injury Update by IPL 2026 Commentator
Varun Chakaravarthy was dropped from KKR’s Playing XI for the first time for the Punjab match due to a finger injury, before again missing the KKR vs LSG fixture.
However, former KKR cricketer Aakash Chopra has revealed a major happening related to the Varun Chakaravarthy injury update. According to Chopra, the spinner has a hairline fracture in his finger, though he already started bowling with a bandage on.
"They are a team that is still searching for a win. Varun Chakaravarthy has started bowling, that's good news, but his hand is still bandaged. Hairline fracture is what I have heard. He is from Chennai only. Even though his current form is not great, you feel he would do better if he plays. If he is available, you might see him playing in place of Anukul Roy," Aakash Chopra revealed on his YouTube channel.
The cricketer-turned-commentator further made big revelations on Matheesha Pathirana's availability in the IPL 2026. The 18-crore-acquired Sri Lankan quick has cleared his fitness test, but has yet to land in India.
"Pathirana is fit but not available. He has got the fitness certificate, but is unavailable for this match. It would have been great had Pathirana come as he had played for Chennai only, and could have played against them now, but KKR's problems are not ending," the CREXpert said.
Varun Chakaravarthy Injury Update: When will next play?
A hairline fracture typically takes three to six weeks to heal, but Varun Chakaravarthy already starting to bowl in nets is a positive update. Considering the tweaker sustained the injury on April 2 (in KKR vs SRH), he will likely get fit from Kolkata’s fixture against LSG in Lucknow, which is scheduled for April 26.
Having said that, Chakaravarthy will easily miss the next three fixtures for the three-time champions. In his absence, KKR will need to unearth a spinner from their ranks, i.e. either Daksh Kamra or Prashant Solanki.
Varun Chakaravarthy will play vs CSK: KKR spokesperson
As per a close KKR spokesperson, Varun Chakaravarthy will play against CSK at Chepauk on Wednesday. He has been practising hard in nets with his bandages on.
"Varun's been training. He's had a bandage on his hand, but then he's still training. He's been training for all the days leading up to this match, so he's good," said the KKR spokesperson as quoted by India Today.
The 34-year-old, who plays for Tamil Nadu in domestics, has a phenomenal record against CSK, with 13 wickets at an economy of 7.05.
