Things have started moving in the BCCI selection panel as they are set to meet to discuss the roadmap for the Indian team, keeping the 2027 ICC World Cup in mind. The ICC World Cup 2027 will be hosted in October-November 2027 in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

Notably, the Indian team had reached the finals of the 2023 World Cup that was played in India. India, under Rohit Sharma, had done extremely well in the tournament, winning all of their games on the road to the final. However, they were handed a humiliating loss in the final by Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on November 19.

BCCI selectors set to pick India squad for Afghanistan series at home

Squads for the one-off Test against Afghanistan and the three ODIs that follow on May 19 are probably going to be chosen by the Indian men's senior selection committee, which is led by Ajit Agarkar.

The candidates have already received a message requesting them to progressively increase their workload for the five-day match that is set to take place immediately after the existing Indian Premier League (IPL), according to a May 11 Times of India story.

A decision regarding the bowling group is anticipated closer to the selection day, and Shubman Gill is anticipated to lead a potent batting unit for the match. Meanwhile, on the other hand, Jasprit Bumrah is set to be rested for the one-off Test and probably the ODI series as well, given his workload management due to his back issues.

Ravindra Jadeja’s spot in Indian ODI team under danger?

A big discussion is set to happen amongst the BCCI selection panel about who will be the leading spin all-rounder in the Indian XI. Will it be Ravindra Jadeja or Axar Patel? Both the players have the same attributes: left-arm finger spin, left-handed middle-order batters, and excellent fielders.

However, Ravindra Jadeja, who had retired from T20Is in 2024, has had a mid-IPL 2026 for the Rajasthan Royals. He has been decent with the ball, but the selectors are not convinced with his approach to the bat, especially in ODIs. Axar Patel was tried at the no. 5 spot in the ICC Champions Trophy, and he succeeded in the examination, handling the pressure in the middle overs well.

Underwhelming performance in ODIs might work against Ravindra Jadeja

In ODI in 2025 and 2026, Jadeja has played 13 ODIs, scoring 149 runs without a single fifty to his name. With the ball, he took 12 wickets in 2025 in ODIs and none in 2026 in three ODIs.

“Jadeja has had underwhelming returns with both bat and ball in the format, and his batting approach could push him towards the exit door as he bats at a position where the management expects more intent. Yet, will it be Jadeja or Axar Patel? Or someone else? It's anybody's guess at the moment, but a discussion is set to happen regarding this slot,” the Times of India report read.

Ravindra Jadeja’s overall record in ODIs

Ravindra Jadeja made his India ODI debut in 2009 and has played 210 games. He has made 2905 runs with 13 fifties and a best score of 87 with an average of 32.27. He has taken 232 wickets with an economy of 4.88 and best bowling figures of 5/33.

Jadeja has won two Champions Trophy titles with India in ODIs and was part of the Indian team that reached the semi-finals in 2015 World Cup and 2019 World Cup and the final in the 2023 World Cup.
