In a major development, the ICC has taken strict action against the Pakistan Cricket Team after the first Test match against Bangladesh at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.

Notably, led by Shan Masood, Pakistan struggled badly during the match, especially in the fourth innings while chasing a target of 267 runs. Their batting line-up completely collapsed, and the team was bowled out for just 163 runs. As a result, Bangladesh secured a massive 104-run victory over Pakistan.

Bangladesh Create History In Dhaka

Notably, Bangladesh delivered one of their finest Test performances to secure their first-ever home Test victory against Pakistan.

The foundation of the victory was laid in the first innings when Bangladesh posted 413 runs on the scoreboard. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto played a magnificent century knock, while Pakistan pacer Mohammad Abbas claimed a five-wicket haul.

Afterward, Pakistan opener Azan Awais responded with a century in the second innings. Even so, Pakistan could only secure a slender 27-run lead. Bangladesh then produced another strong batting display, reaching 240/9 declared, with Shanto once again leading from the front with a brilliant 87 off 150 balls.

Later, pacer Nahid Rana completely destroyed Pakistan’s batting line-up in the final innings. As a result, Pakistan were bundled out for 163, handing Bangladesh a famous 104-run triumph.

ICC Imposes Heavy Punishment On Pakistan

Following the defeat, the ICC, led by Jay Shah, announced severe sanctions against Pakistan for maintaining a slow over-rate during the Test match in Dhaka.

It is important to note that Pakistan have been fined 40 percent of their match fees. Along with the financial penalty, the ICC also deducted eight World Test Championship (WTC) points from their tally.

Notably, Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the punishment after Pakistan were found to be eight overs short of the required target once time allowances were considered.

According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players receive a fine of five percent of their match fee for every over short of the allotted time. Furthermore, Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions states that teams lose one WTC point for each over short.

Therefore, Pakistan lost eight valuable WTC points.

Massive Shake-Up In WTC Standings

The result and the subsequent penalty have caused major changes in the WTC standings. Notably, Bangladesh climbed from eighth to sixth position after registering their first win of the cycle. Their PCT jumped dramatically from 16.67 to 44.44.

Meanwhile, Pakistan suffered a huge fall in the standings. Initially, the team dropped from fifth to seventh after the defeat. Their PCT declined from 50.00 to 33.33.

However, after the ICC deducted eight points for the slow over-rate offence, Pakistan’s tally dropped further to just four points, placing them eighth with a PCT of 11.11 and making their WTC campaign even more difficult.

Pakistan’s WTC Final Chances In Serious Danger

Pakistan’s road to the WTC 2025-27 Final has now become extremely challenging. Earlier, they had split their home series against South Africa 1-1. However, the crushing defeat against Bangladesh and the heavy punishment have pushed them into a dangerous position.

At present, Pakistan would likely need to win eight or nine of their remaining ten Test matches to move back into the qualification zone. Moreover, their upcoming schedule appears extremely difficult.

Notably, three away Tests in England and two matches in the Caribbean could create serious trouble for Men in Green. On the other hand, the home series against Sri Lanka and New Zealand might offer some hope.

Even then, the damage caused by away defeats and point deductions could prove too costly in the long run. Now, winning the second Test in Sylhet has become absolutely important if Pakistan want to keep their WTC Final hopes alive.
