Indian-origin USA bowler Isani Vaghela has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect after it was confirmed that the seam bowler has an illegal bowling action.
The match officials reported Vaghela after the USA’s match against Ireland in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier 2026 in Nepal. The ICC’s Event Panel reviewed her footage from the game and concluded that she has an illegal bowling action and suspended her from bowling in international cricket in accordance with Article 6.7 of the regulations.
ICC’s regulations on bowling actions
The angle of the shoulder should be more than 15 degrees. As per the regulations, a player must be tested at an ICC-accredited testing centre if the match officials report any bowling action issues.
“An illegal bowling action is where a player is throwing rather than bowling the ball. This is defined by the ICC as being where the player’s elbow extends by an amount of more than 15 degrees between their arm reaching the horizontal and the ball being released. Match officials in international cricket use the naked eye and their cricketing experience to decide whether they believe a player may be using an illegal bowling action, and if so, they will submit a report,” read the ICC regulations.
“The player is then tested at an ICC Accredited Testing Centre, using state-of-the-art technology and supervised by experts in the science of human movement. This testing process provides an answer as to whether the player is in fact using an Illegal Bowling Action and, if so, they will be suspended from bowling until they have modified their bowling action and undertaken another test successfully,” it further reads.
Veghala’s suspension to remain in effect until re-assessment
Vaghela’s suspension will remain in place until she undergoes a re-assessment of her bowling action that confirms that she can bowl without using an illegal bowling action.
The 2o-year-old USA cricketer has played as many as 37 T20Is for her country and six ODIs ever since making her debut in 2021. She has a very impressive economy rate of 4.87 in T20Is, having picked 32 wickets in her short career so far. She has not played a lot of ODIs and only has four wickets to her name in the longer white-ball format.
Troubles continue for USA Cricket
Earlier this week, USA men’s cricketer Aaron Jones was also suspended by the ICC after being charged with five counts of breaching the anti-corruption codes of Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the ICC. As a result, he was suspended from all forms of cricket with immediate effect.
ICC's statement said, "Jones has been provisionally suspended from all cricket with immediate effect and has 14 days from 28 January 2026 to respond to the charges."
Aaron Jones's charges were related to the Bim10 tournament in 2023-24, which falls under the jurisdiction of the CWI Anti-Corruption Code, with two additional charges relating to International Matches, which are under the jurisdiction of the ICC Code.
