India and Afghanistan clashed in the second ODI of the three-match series on June 17, 2026. This game is being played at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow, and sees India having a lead of 1-0, having won the first game in Dharamsala.
The Dharamshala game was a rain-shortened affair of 25 overs per side and saw Afghanistan batting after Shubman Gill won the toss. Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the lone fighter for Afghanistan, striking a terrific century off just 48 balls. He finished with 102 in 51 balls, with 8 fours and 8 sixes. Afghanistan was looking promising for a total in excess of 210 runs.

But Indian bowlers, namely debutants Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey, picked three wickets each and restricted Afghanistan to just 194 runs in 25 overs. In response, Shubman Gill took the onus of chasing the total down after Rohit Sharma got run out for 16.
Gill made 84* with 11 fours and 2 sixes and received support from Ishan Kishan (34) and KL Rahul (39*) as India won the game by 7 wickets and went 1-0 up in the series. Gill was also named the Player of the Match for his brilliant knock.

ICC rules broken in the second ODI between India and Afghanistan in Lucknow
India and Afghanistan met in the second ODI of the series in Lucknow’s Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium on June 17, 2026. Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss and chose to field first as the black soil pitch gets better under lights.
Afghanistan made three changes as Mohammad Nabi, Azmatullah Omarzai, and Ziaur Rahman were replaced in the side by Bilal Sami and Darwish Rasooli, who made their ODI debut, and one more player.
As for India, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harsh Dubey, and Prasidh Krishna made way for Kuldeep Yadav and Yashasvi Jaiswal, while Prince Yadav made his India ODI debut.
What do the ICC rules state for Drinks Break per innings in ODIs
Multiple reports suggested that the game will see a big tweak to its schedule. Due to intense heat in Lucknow, the match will have three drink breaks per innings. Since Afghanistan is bowling first, the drinks breaks for the first innings are likely to be taken at 2:30 pm, 3:30 pm, and 4:30 pm.
This is a massive breach of ICC rules pertaining to intervals in one-day international matches. There are strict laws for changing the number of intervals and interval timings.
As per 11.4.1—Changing agreed times of intervals: If the innings of the team batting first are completed prior to the scheduled time for the interval, the interval shall take place immediately, and the innings of the team batting second will commence correspondingly earlier, provided that this does not lead to an interval occurring more than 30 minutes prior to the scheduled interval.
11.5. Intervals for drinks:
• 11.5.1. Each session may include two drink breaks, spaced one hour and ten minutes apart. Law 15.9's regulations must be closely adhered to, with the exception that umpires may allow additional drink breaks in sweltering weather.
• 11.5.2. As long as no playing time is lost, a single player may receive a drink on the field at the edge of the boundary or when a wicket falls. Without the umpires' approval, no further beverages may be brought onto the field. Any player who brings alcohol onto the field must wear appropriate cricket clothing (bibs are required; see the note in paragraph 24.1.4).
