In a dramatic turn of events, Pakistan boycotted the high-profile T20 World Cup match against India on Sunday evening. The Pakistan government issued an official statement, allowing the national side to participate in the T20 World Cup. However, it also revealed that the Pakistan players wouldn't take the field in the group-stage match against India on February 15.

Regarded as the mother of all battles, the India vs Pakistan encounter is undoubtedly one of the most thrilling rivalries across all sports. Given that a billion eyes passionately watch this clash whenever these two teams face off, Pakistan's decision to withdraw from the India match might cripple the ICC with a major financial loss.

ICC reacts after Pakistan boycotts India match

On Sunday evening, PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi had formal discussions with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif regarding Pakistan's participation in the T20 World Cup 2026. After the meeting concluded, the Pakistan government issued an official statement on X, confirming its withdrawal from the high-voltage clash against arch-rival India.

In response, the ICC issued an official statement revealing that the PCB hadn't confirmed its stance on boycotting the India match. The apex body suggested that Pakistan think twice before executing such an extreme step that can adversely affect cricket in the country.

How much money will ICC lose if India vs Pakistan T20 World Cup match is called off?

While the ICC and the PCB remain at loggerheads, a Cricbuzz report has revealed that the organisers might bear a whopping loss of 200 Crores or more if Pakistan walks the talk and boycotts the much-awaited match against India.

According to the report, each India game in a global ICC event is valued at 10-11 million US Dollars, which translates into roughly 100 crores in Indian currency. Given that the India vs Pakistan clash is the most hyped face-off, the organisers aimed to generate approximately 200 crores, or more, on February 15.

So, if Pakistan and India do not play each other, the ICC as well as the broadcasters are likely to lose a significant amount of revenue at the T20 World Cup.

Possible sanctions on Pakistan if it actually boycotts India match

In its official statement, the ICC has made it clear that Pakistan can't question its authority and sovereignty by boycotting a specific match in the T20 World Cup. In fact, the apex cricketing body expects a practical resolution from the PCB, which has yet to submit an official confirmation on the matter.

However, if the Pakistan government doesn't hold back and sticks to its words, the PCB will bear the brunt of the ICC. Reports claim that Pakistan's decision to boycott the India game could plunge the PCB into a major financial crisis, with the ICC planning to impose multiple sanctions in retaliation.

Besides ordering its member boards not to issue NOCs for the PSL, the ICC might expel Pakistan from the Asia Cup and withdraw the PCB's share of revenues.
