Gautam Gambhir writes to BCCI for India's horror batting show vs USA at Wankhede Stadium

India won their inaugural clash against the United States in the 2026 T20 World Cup opener on February 7. However, a hint of doubt was sprinkled over the chaos that unfolded in the top order. Had it not been Suryakumar Yadav taking charge with the bat, India’s disaster would have been sealed by the USA bowlers.

Adding to this lingering question over India’s toppled top and middle order, despite being one of the teams to beat at the 2026 T20 World Cup, was the nature of the Wankhede Stadium pitch, which saw India lose six wickets inside 13 overs for just 77 runs.

SKY saved the day at wacky Wankhede

While Indian broadcasters and media houses were busy flooding feeds with talk of breaching the 300-run mark, the tacky Wankhede pitch posed a serious threat to Suryakumar Yadav’s men.

Suryakumar’s 49-ball 84 at a strike rate of 171.43 saved the day after India struggled to put up even a modest total. A score of 161 at Wankhede appears below par, a total usually reserved for A or B teams.

Nevertheless, despite escaping with a win against the USA, it was later revealed that the Indian camp was left baffled by the unexpected nature of the Wankhede pitch.

India management unhappy with Wankhede pitch

In a recent report by The Times of India, it was quoted that the Indian team had made their displeasure known to the Board of Control for Cricket in India due to the pitch’s unexpected behaviour.

The report added that India have made it clear they prefer high-scoring tracks, and the Delhi pitch, which hosts Namibia on February 12, is also expected to follow the same template.

The average first-innings score at Wankhede lies between 170 and 175 in T20I games, with IPL fixtures often producing towering totals. However, India’s collapse suggested something was amiss with the surface.

Failure of aggression in the very first match!

India, who pride themselves on an ultra-aggressive batting approach led by openers Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma, failed to get starts. Kishan scored a 16-ball 20, while Abhishek Sharma recorded a golden duck.

Power-hitters like Shivam Dube also fell for a golden duck, with Rinku Singh dismissed for a sluggish 14-ball 6. Hardik Pandya, too, struggled, managing just five runs.

Eventually, it was India’s bowlers who bailed the team out, with Mohammed Siraj emerging as the highest wicket-taker with three scalps from four overs. Arshdeep Singh picked up two wickets alongside Axar Patel, while Varun Chakaravarthy claimed one wicket, conceding 24 runs from his four overs.

India, the 'flat-track bullies'?

This pitch controversy recalls the Eden Gardens row, where Gautam Gambhir was visibly unhappy with the pitch curator for preparing surfaces that did not suit the team’s strengths.

Similarly, despite India branding themselves as a batting-heavy side, pacers from both teams proved dangerous, while spinners also extracted grip from the surface later in the game.

With the TOI report further stating that India are likely to prefer venues that promise high-scoring contests, flat pitches appear to be the new preferred template for the Men in Blue, with any unpredictable surfaces likely to be shown the red eye.
