The resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan came after weeks of protests over the NEET paper leak controversy. Students and opposition parties had demanded accountability from the government.

Soon after Pradhan announced his resignation, social media users shifted their attention to cricket. 

Fans started posting memes comparing the minister’s exit with India’s recent performances under Gambhir. Many also suggested that he should resign, even though the two events had no connection.

Amid the growing online discussion, Gautam Gambhir shared a cryptic post on Instagram on July 27, 2026. His caption read, “Jab desh ka sabse Gambhir insaan muskura de… 😂😂.”

The post immediately caught the attention of cricket fans. Many believed it was Gambhir’s response to the ongoing memes and conversations surrounding his resignation.

While Gambhir did not directly mention the criticism or the calls for him to step down, several fans interpreted the post as a light-hearted reaction to the situation.

Why Are Indian Fans Demanding Gautam Gambhir's Resignation?

It is important to mention that India recently lost the T20I series against Ireland 2-0, suffered a 4-0 defeat in England, and then went on to lose the ODI series 2-1 under head coach Gautam Gambhir.

These results disappointed many fans, who questioned the team's performances under Gambhir.

Meanwhile, India recently visited Zimbabwe under stand-in head coach VVS Laxman while Gambhir was rested. The young Indian side, led by Shreyas Iyer, won the series 3-0 with an impressive performance.

Following that clean sweep, social media claimed that India’s success came because Gambhir was not with the team. The win also sparked fresh discussions over whether VVS Laxman should become India’s full-time head coach.

The fact cannot be denied that recently India have failed to perform up to expectations on the UK tour. But we also cannot miss the fact that India won both the Champions Trophy 2025 and the T20 World Cup 2026 during his tenure as head coach. 

Overall, looking at his numbers, he coached the Men in Blue in 26 ODIs, of which the team won 16 matches and lost 9. In T20Is, he coached the team in 51 matches, of which India won 37 matches and lost 11.
