Former Indian international player, Jacob Martin, found himself in an unfortunate situation in his hometown on January 27, after he was arrested by the Vadodara police after ramming into three vehicles in the middle of the night.
Luckily, there was no harm done to anyone on the road in the vehicles, including him, and the ex-cricketer escaped serious consequences of reckless driving.
Ex-India batter arrested for car crash
Jacob Martin, who served India in 10 ODI matches between 1999 and 2001, is one of the renowned names in the domestic circuit, who has scored 9192 FC runs in 138 matches, averaging 46.65 with 23 hundreds to his name. To go with the impeccable FC record, he also has 2948 List A runs in 101 matches, representing and captaining Baroda.
As confirmed by the concerned police officers, the former player was driving his MG Hector car from Akota to his home on OP Road under the influence of alcohol at around 2:30 am. Due to the intoxication, he lost control of his car and crashed into a Hyundai Venue, Maruti Celerio and Kia Seltos, causing serious damage.
However, due to no physical harm to others, he was released on bail, but his car was seized by the police for further official procedures.
"He was visibly inebriated and unable to walk. He has been booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act for rash and negligent driving, endangering the personal safety of others and other relevant sections. No casualties or injuries have been reported," revealed an officer.
Martin's old legal struggles and life-threatening accident
Notably, Martin has a reputation for getting into such struggles after his cricketing career ended. Back in 2011, he was arrested by the Delhi Police for his involvement in an illegal immigration racket of young cricketers, which saw him spending a subsequent time behind bars.
Once again in 2018, he was involved in a serious road accident in December, when he sustained injuries to his lungs and liver. His wife sought help from the BCCI and the Baroda Cricket Association.
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly, BCA secretary Sanjay Patel and IPL franchises like the Chennai Super Kings were among the parties offering him help, including 5 Lakh from the BCCI. Baroda skipper Krunal Pandya also offered a blank cheque to his family, saying fill up whatever amount is required over 1 Lakh rupees.
In his short international stint in a star-studded batting order, which boasted the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Ganguly, Virender Sehwag and VVS Laxman, among others, the red-ball cricket stalwart in domestic cricket could never break into the Test team and ended his ODI career with only 158 runs to his name, including a high score of 39.
