Fakhar Zaman’s latest emotional outburst hints at a storm brewing beneath the surface, one that may soon spill beyond the boundary ropes.

Facing a ban of two matches for his alleged involvement in the PSL 2026 ball-tampering scandal, the senior Pakistan opener now finds himself at a crossroads, with reports suggesting he is prepared to escalate the matter legally rather than let the controversy define his international career.

Late last month, the 36-year-old was handed a two-match ban by the PCB for allegedly changing the condition of the ball during Lahore Qalandars’ low-scoring PSL 2026 match against Karachi Kings. During a hearing, match referee Roshan Mahanama concluded that Fakhar had tampered the ball and breached Article 41.3 of the PSL code of conduct.

As reported by Pakistan sports journalist Sanaullah Khan, sources close to the Lahore Qalandars franchise have stated that Fakhar Zaman is “extremely emotional” over the two-match ban verdict handed to him by the PCB.

The report added that the cricketer is aiming to challenge the Mohsin Naqvi-led PCB in court, as he does not want to continue playing for Pakistan with a ‘ball tampering’ strain to his name.

PSL rejects Fakhar Zaman’s appeal

The Lahore Qalandars opener was handed a two-match ban by the PCB and match referee Roshan Mahanama on March 31 earlier this week. The cricketer subsequently lodged an appeal, a right afforded to him by the PSL’s Code of Conduct.

However, on April 2, the PCB said in a statement that the board has dismissed Fakhar Zaman’s appeal and upheld the ban imposed by the referee. Issuing a public statement, the PCB said “The appeal was heard today by the PSL Technical Committee comprising Professor Javed Malik, Dr Mumraiz Naqshband, and Mr Syed Ali Naqi."

"Pursuant to conducting a de novo inquiry, reviewing all evidence, and hearing submissions from relevant individuals, the Committee has dismissed the appeal and upheld the two-match ban imposed by Match Referee Roshan Mahanama.”

Fakhar Zaman’s ball-tampering incident explained

The incident occurred during the fag end of Lahore Qalandars’ low-scoring thriller against Karachi Kings in match number six of the PSL 2026 season on March 29.

Before Qalandars fast bowler Haris Rauf could bowl the final over of the match to defend 14 runs, the on-field umpires determined that the condition of the ball was altered after it exchanged hands between captain Shaheen Afridi and Fakhar Zaman.

The umpires penalized the Qalandars by five runs, thus easing up the equation for the Karachi Kings as they required nine runs from the final six deliveries. The penalty proved costly for the Qalandars as the Karachi Kings secured a four-wicket win with three balls to spare.

Fakhar’s career dented with ball-tampering claims

Compatible to the reported claims of the senior Pakistan and Lahore Qalandars opener, his illustrious cricketing career now risks being overshadowed by controversy.

In his report, journalist Sanaullah Khan even confirmed that the cricketer might contemplate retirement as he does not want to play the remaining three-four years of his career with the ball-tampering strain.

As of now, it remains to be seen whether Fakhar follows through on his legal threat or if the matter finds resolution within the cricketing framework before escalating further.
