England’s Liam Dawson made a shocking call on Wednesday, May 13, as he retired from first-class cricket with immediate effect. The experienced spin bowling all-rounder was recently part of England’s T20 World Cup 2026 setup, making the announcement surprising for cricket followers across England.
Dawson remained involved in England’s white-ball plans despite limited opportunities in Test cricket over the years. His sudden retirement from red-ball cricket now ends a long county career where he established himself among England’s dependable domestic spin bowling all-rounders in first-class cricket.
Hampshire In Shock As Liam Dawson Retired From First-Class Cricket
Hampshire County Cricket Club was left stunned as Liam Dawson announced his retirement during the ongoing County Championship season. The left-arm spinner had played four matches this season, remaining an important part of Hampshire’s plans before deciding to step away from first-class cricket.

Dawson has been one of Hampshire’s most reliable performers, contributing with both bat and ball over several years. The experienced spin-bowling all-rounder was among the county’s senior players and was expected to play a key role in Hampshire’s ongoing Championship campaign this season.
Hampshire’s County Championship match against Essex, which began on 8 May in Chelmsford, has now officially become Liam Dawson’s final first-class appearance. While he retires from the longer format, he will continue playing for Hampshire’s white-ball teams and participate in franchise cricket globally.
England Test Snub Could Lead to Liam Dawson’s First-Class Retirement
Although Liam Dawson has not officially given a reason for retiring from first-class cricket, England’s recent Test squad omission may have played a role. The experienced spin-bowling all-rounder was not included in England's squad for the New Zealand Test.
At 36, Dawson still seemed capable of continuing in first-class cricket for several more years. Spin-bowling all-rounders typically enjoy longer domestic careers, making his sudden retirement surprising and possibly linked to frustration over repeated omissions from England’s Test side.
Dawson has had an inconsistent journey with England’s Test team. He made his debut in 2016 but played only four matches overall, with his most recent appearance coming last year against India in Manchester during England’s home Test series.
Hampshire Lost A Legend In Liam Dawson From First-Class Cricket
Liam Dawson finishes his first-class career with remarkable numbers, having played 218 matches across domestic and international cricket. The all-rounder scored 10,828 runs and took 380 wickets, proving his value as one of England’s dependable county performers.
Most of Dawson’s first-class appearances came for Hampshire, where he became a modern-day legend. In 211 first-class matches for the county, he scored over 10,424 runs and took 361 wickets, cementing his status as one of Hampshire’s great.
Beyond Hampshire, Dawson also represented Essex, the Mountaineers, and England in first-class cricket. His consistent performances with both bat and ball earned him respect across county cricket, leaving Hampshire to lose one of their most experienced and reliable all-rounders.
