Dhruv Jurel struck a fiery half-century against Sri Lanka on a rain-curtailed Day 2 of the first Test at the Galle International Stadium. Batting at number six, the cricketer belted four boundaries and a huge six in his innings.
Notching up his second Test fifty, Dhruv lost his wicket while attempting to sustain his aggressive onslaught against the hosts. While speaking with the reporters at the end of Day 2, Dhruv pretty much echoed head coach Gautam Gambhir’s sentiment on personal milestones of players.
Dhruv Jurel unbothered with personal milestones
While speaking with the reporters during the press conference after Day 2, Dhruv Jurel was asked about the nature of his dismissal. Aiming to go big shortly after completing his half-century, the cricketer said that he does not play for personal achievements as he only plays according to the requirements of the team.

He said “I never play for personal milestone. I play however the team needs to play like.”
As it happened, Dhruv got caught at slip courtesy of a sensational catch from Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya De Silva off Prabath Jayasuriya.
When Gautam Gambhir downplayed personal milestones
Dhruv Jurel’s remarks about personal milestones pretty much echoed the sentiments of Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir. Back in mid-2024 when Gambhir was appointed as national head coach as a replacement of Rahul Dravid, the former Indian opener also downplayed “personal milestones” of players in favour of overall team requirement.
Even earlier this year after Team India lifted the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Ahmedabad, the Indian head coach urged fans to “celebrate trophies” instead of personal milestones of players.
"For too long in Indian cricket, we've spoken about milestones, and I hope, till I'm there, we're not going to talk about milestones," Gambhir said at the press conference after India won the T20 World Cup.
"You can see it very easily as well. You can see it in the last three games, what Sanju [Samson] did - 97 not out, 89 and 89. Imagine if you would have been playing for a milestone, probably we wouldn't have got 250. So I think this is for you guys [media] as well. Stop celebrating milestones, celebrate trophies," Gambhir further added.
It now appears that Dhruv Jurel fits right into Gautam Gambhir’s philosophy, and his calculated style of cricket might win him a longer run in the Indian Test side under the current coaching regime.
A look at Dhruv Jurel’s career
Dhruv Jurel made his Test debut for Team India way back in February 2024 during a home Test series against England. Apart from scoring a half-century in the series and hitting a match-winning hundred the following year against the West Indies, Dhruv’s Test career is yet to take off on a path he might have desired.
Holding a prolific first-class average of over 55, the 25-year-old is currently averaging only 35.26 after playing 11 Test matches for the Indian cricket team.
His latest half-century against Sri Lanka, scoring 51 runs off 68 balls at a strike rate of 75, catapulted the Indian total to 460-9 from 116 overs by stumps on Day 2. The innings also extended his run tally to 529 runs in 17 innings spanning 11 matches.
In a bid to sustain his Test career, it is imperative for Dhruv Jurel to enjoy a prolific Test series against Sri Lanka. With three more innings remaining, the cricketer will be aiming to overcome Sri Lanka’s experienced and threatening spin attack on overseas conditions.
