In a significant development for the Chennai Super Kings, the team has suffered a major setback in their ongoing IPL 2026 campaign. The five-time champions had a shaky start to the season, losing their first three matches (RR, PBKS and RCB).
However, they showed signs of recovery with two consecutive home victories against the Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders.
CSK is now preparing to face Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, but the latest injury news has dealt a serious blow to their plans.
Khaleel Ahmed ruled out of IPL 2026
CSK pacer Khaleel Ahmed has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2026 (as per India Today) due to a significant injury sustained during the team's April 14 clash against Kolkata Knight Riders in Chennai.
Medical reports have confirmed that Khaleel Ahmed has suffered a Grade 2 quadriceps tear. The injury involves a high-grade partial tear along with a stretch injury to the right rectus femoris tendon, and a complete tear of the direct head of the muscle (as per India Today).
This serious condition will require an extended recovery period, ruling him out for the rest of the tournament and leaving CSK with a major gap in their bowling attack.

It is important to note that, considering the seriousness of the Khaleel Ahmed's injury, the left-arm pacer has been advised long-term rehabilitation, and will need 10 to 12 weeks to recover.
When and how was Khaleel Ahmed injured?
Khaleel Ahmed's injury occurred during the 17th over of the innings in the CSK vs KKR clash. While running to deliver the final ball of the over, the star bowler experienced discomfort in his right thigh.
However, he wanted to continue and complete the over, but the pain was not bearable, and he had to stop midway through his run-up and could not complete the over.
Gurjapneet Singh stepped in to finish the over but conceded a boundary.
Who can replace Khaleel Ahmed in CSK’s playing XI?
CSK's bowling options are already limited. Nathan Ellis has been ruled out of the season, while Matt Henry has struggled with form. Spencer Johnson, signed as a replacement, is still recovering from injury and has not yet joined the squad.
In Khaleel's absence, Mukesh Choudhary is the most likely replacement. All-round options like Ramakrishna Ghosh may also be considered.
Meanwhile, players like Gurjapneet Singh and Anshul Kamboj are expected to take on bigger responsibilities alongside Jamie Overton for CSK in the bowling department.
Injury woes continue to hurt CSK in IPL 2026
CSK's campaign has been heavily affected by injuries this season. Their star player, MS Dhoni, has missed the tournament so far due to a calf injury. Dewald Brevis also missed early matches due to injury.
With multiple players sidelined and replacements not fully fit, CSK face a tough challenge ahead. CSK's captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and think tank will now need to rethink their combinations to continue in IPL 2026.
