Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s India Debut vs Ireland Hits A Massive BCCI Roadblock

Young cricket talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has recently grabbed attention across the world, might have to wait a little longer for his India debut.

Earlier reports suggested that the RR sensation could make his first appearance for the senior Indian team during the upcoming tour of Ireland. However, recent developments indicate that this plan has hit a temporary obstacle.

Notably, the 15-year-old batter has been included in a list of 35 T20 specialists. These players have been shortlisted as possible candidates for the Ireland tour scheduled in June and July.

Visa issues create a roadblock

One of the key reasons behind this delay relates to travel arrangements. According to PTI reports, the cricket board asked selectors to submit at least 35 names for visa processing. Since the team will enter through Ireland instead of England, every player needs a separate Irish visa.

“The selectors were asked by the BCCI logistics department to give at least 35 names whose Irish visa needed to be processed. Since the team’s first port of entry will be Ireland and not England, a UK visa won’t suffice. Everyone requires a separate Irish visa,” a BCCI source told PTI.

Strong competition within the Indian T20 squad

Another major challenge comes from the intense competition within the Indian T20 squad. Currently, there are several strong opening batters already performing at a high level. Players like Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan have delivered excellent performances in recent matches, including the T20 World Cup 2026.

Moreover, Yashasvi Jaiswal is also available as an additional option. With so many in-form players, it becomes difficult to create space for a newcomer, even one as talented as Sooryavanshi.

“The selection committee is convinced Vaibhav is ready, but then you are talking about Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan. All three are half-centurions in the T20 World Cup final. If you take a fourth opener, then Yashasvi Jaiswal is also there,” the source said.

The situation becomes even more complicated when team balance is considered. If one of the current openers is dropped to make room for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, it may raise further questions about other players in the lineup. Therefore, the decision requires careful planning rather than quick changes.

“Vaibhav is ready, but the selectors need to give very good reasons to drop Abhishek or Sanju. Because if you drop either one, the question arises — how is Surya keeping his place?” the source added.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Indian debut likely to be delayed

In addition, there is still no clear decision on when exactly he will make his debut. While Ireland was considered a strong possibility, other tours are also being looked at. These include India’s tours of Zimbabwe and a home series against the West Indies. Furthermore, the Asian Games in Japan later this year could also provide an opportunity.

“It could be the UK tour or Zimbabwe. But the best platform could be the Asian Games or the West Indies home series, as these overlap, meaning two T20 squads. Vaibhav will play one of the two, if not earlier,” the source said.

Meanwhile, there is a possibility that India might field two different squads during overlapping tournaments. This scenario could increase Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's chances of getting selected sooner rather than later.

It is important to note that whenever Vaibhav Sooryavanshi makes his debut, it is expected to be a historic moment. If Sooryavanshi plays for India this year, he will become the youngest player ever to represent the country.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s performance in IPL 2026

In the meantime, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continues to impress with his performances. Notably, he has started the IPL 2026 season in outstanding fashion while playing for Rajasthan Royals. His innings include a quick 78 runs off 26 balls, a rapid 52 off 17 balls, and a strong 39 off just 14 balls. Overall, he has scored 200 runs in five innings so far.

Looking ahead, fans will next see him play against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 19 at Eden Gardens.
