England veteran Joe Root produced one of the most stunning catches ever witnessed in first-class cricket as he played in the Yorkshire vs Somerset County Division One 2026.
The Test match, which started on May 1 at the Taunton ground, saw Yorkshire bundled out quickly for a paltry score of 162 runs in their first innings.
Joe Root wasn't impressive with the bat as he scored only 33 runs from 57 deliveries. However, he made an immediate impact with his fielding as Somerset came in to chase the target.
How Root Produced Fielding Brilliance On The Ground
During the first delivery of the 78th over, bowled by Dominic Bess, Lewis Gregory, the captain of Somerset, was sent back to the pavilion after Joe Root turned back the clock and grabbed a screamer straight out of thin air.
As Bess bowled a flighted delivery that landed outside the off-stump and angled in, Gregory attempted to clear the ropes. He slog-swept it towards mid-on.

As the ball gained height, Root, stationed at long-on, came running to position himself underneath it. However, at the very last moment, he realised that the ball might go beyond his reach.
He quickly shifted his stance and dived athletically towards the ball, grabbing it and sliding across the grass to complete the catch while keeping it under control.
Root Helps Yorkshire Bundle Somerset Early
After the wicket, he made a small celebration with a quick punch in the air, but remained calm and composed as ever.
As he joined his teammates to celebrate the dismissal of Somerset's skipper, Somerset were reduced to 271 for 8.
Migael Pretorius and Alfie Ogborne failed to add much, and the team was eventually bowled out for 274 runs. On the same day, Yorkshire came in to bat and managed only 13 runs before stumps.
Joe Root’s Recent Dominant Form In Cricket
Root, in County Division One 2026, has been impressive, including a 127-ball 96 in the previous match against Sussex.
In first-class cricket, Root boasts 19,185 runs from 417 innings with a remarkable average of 55.35. He also has 55 centuries and 89 half-centuries in the format, which makes him a legend of the game.
As Root continues his journey in the County Division One tournament, he was also in good form in the ODI series against Sri Lanka, where he scored 61, 75, and 111 from the three ODIs at a strike rate of 85.76.
For the unaware, Joe Root’s last white-ball stint for his country was against Australia in the Ashes 2025–26, where, from 10 innings, he became one of the highest run-scorers for England with 400 runs at an average of 44.44. He also had two centuries in that series before England were dominated by Australia 4-1.
