In a recent development, Beth Mooney, the Australian wicketkeeper-batter, who has been representing Perth Scorchers since the 2020 season in the Women's Big Bash League, has effectively replaced Sophie Devine as the captain.
The announcement came on October 30 before Perth Scorchers' curtain-raiser game against Melbourne Renegades Women on October 31. For the unaware, the WBBL began on October 29, with Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars bagging their first wins of the tournament.
Sophie Devine steps down from Scorchers captaincy after six seasons
New Zealand's legendary all-rounder Sophie Devine decided to step down after developing the team since 2020. After six successful seasons, Devine decided to step away from the role, even though she will remain part of the team.
Notably, Devine is present in the squad alongside other established names in the women's cricketing world, like Pakistan's Fatima Sana, Australia's Alana King, among others.
Beth Mooney has, meanwhile, captained three teams in her T20 career so far. She has led Gujarat Giants Women in the Women's Premier League, Manchester Originals in The Hundred, and even Perth Scorchers for four matches between 2020 and 2024.
Interestingly, while at the helm, she has averaged 39.56 with the bat, with her highest score coming for the Scorchers as a captain, at an average of 57.66.
Scorchers’ win record under Sophie Devine and Beth Mooney in WBBL
Speaking of victories and individual records, Mooney has managed to lead the Scorchers to victory in two out of the four matches she has captained, while Devine has managed to bag 38 victories out of the 76 games she has led the team in.
Notably, Devine led the team to success in the very first season as captain, winning the 2020 season by defeating the Adelaide Strikers by 12 runs in the final. They were defeated in the 2025 final despite the team fighting its way up to the top.
It is also important to note that no specific reason has been declared yet by the Perth Scorchers as to why Sophie Devine has decided to leave her role as captain. However, the captaincy change will surely bring in another wave of hope for the team, which has been longing for the trophy for the last five years.
