England Test captain Ben Stokes is all set to return to competitive cricket on Friday when Durham face Worcestershire in the Division Two County Championship game in Worcester. The all-rounder has been declared fully fit after recovering from a nasty facial injury.
Stokes has not played since England’s Ashes defeat to Australia in the 2025–26 series, where he also battled a groin problem. His comeback provides a timely boost for England ahead of their home Test season, which begins later this summer against New Zealand.
Ben Stokes declared fit for bowling for Durham in County Championship
Ben Stokes’ return to the cricket field is a huge boost for England, but questions always lingers over his bowling fitness. Durham coach Ryan Campbell has now provided a clear update ahead of his comeback match.
“He [Ben Stokes] will be bowling for us, 100 percent. In one of the innings he might even take the new ball, that’s certainly something we are thinking about,” Campbell told Britain’s Press Association.
The update comes as a huge relief for England ahead of a busy Test summer, highlighting Ben Stokes’ value as a genuine all-rounder. Durham plan to manage him carefully, prioritizing rhythm over heavy bowling workloads initially.
Campbell’s comments also suggests that Stokes is progressing strongly in his recovery and physically confident with the ball. Durham’s confidence on him opening the bowling reflects his current fitness status despite the recent injury setbacks.

Ben Stokes battled multiple injury setbacks before comeback
Ben Stokes suffered a serious facial injury in February while working with academy players at Durham. He was struck directly in the face by a ball, leaving him with a broken cheekbone requiring surgery.
Stokes later revealed he was fortunate the injury was not worse, admitting the ball could have caused far more damage. The England captain then entered rehabilitation and gradually resumed training during his recovery period.
The all-rounder also struggled with a groin injury during England’s 2025–26 Ashes defeat in Australia. His recurring fitness concerns created fresh discussions around workload management ahead of his long-awaited return to competitive cricket.
After completing rehabilitation, Stokes recently confirmed he had received medical clearance to resume playing again and now is set to take the field for Durham on Friday against Worcestershire at their county ground in New Road.

Ben Stokes has been at the centre of attention following England’s disappointing Ashes defeat in Australia, with questions continuing around the team’s direction. Despite the criticism, Stokes has repeatedly expressed his desire to continue as England's Test captain.
His commitment is already visible through his quick return from injury ahead of England’s busy home summer. Stokes also enjoyed an impressive year with the ball in 2025, claiming 33 Test wickets, further proving his value as England’s captain and leading all-rounder.
