Ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, the BCCI has reportedly called a meeting to decide the future of Ajit Agarkar as chief selector. Agarkar’s existing contract ends in September since he previously received an extension.

The 2027 World Cup is over 12 months away, but the BCCI are leaving no stone unturned in getting their preparations right. Apart from players, the board is also looking at fixing the management to ensure there is no room for any instability and indecision.

Ajit Agarkar likely to be offered an extension

BCCI’s key agenda is to decide the future of chief selector Ajit Agarkar. His present contract is set to expire in September, and according to Sports Tak, the board will conduct a meeting with him to discuss his future.

According to the report, the BCCI are willing to offer yet another one-year extension to Agarkar to continue as the men’s selection committee’s head, as there is enough support for him within the board.

But that alone is not enough. Ajit Agarkar himself will also have to decide whether he wants to continue in this demanding role. In his tenure so far, he has faced intense criticism, and with the World Cup approaching, the scrutiny is only expected to increase.

Agarkar’s controversial tenure as chief selector

Having said that, Agarkar’s tenure as chief selector has seen success as well as failures. Under his selection committee, India won the 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cups and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

But on the other hand, India also lost a historic home Test series to New Zealand and had a disappointing Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign. Not only that, but rumours of Agarkar’s rift with seniors Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have hit the headlines multiple times.

The recent uncertainty over Rohit’s ODI future has reportedly created differences between sections of the BCCI and the selection committee.

Also, Ajit Agarkar was accused of mishandling Mohammad Shami as he was reportedly ignored despite being fit and having consistent performances in domestic cricket. All these incidents will likely be taken into consideration before the BCCI comes to a decision.

Will Agarkar get Gambhir’s support?

Having said that, the BCCI may consult head coach Gautam Gambhir before deciding Ajit Agarkar’s fate as chief selector, as the duo have worked closely together over the last couple of years.

They led India’s transition in Test cricket after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s retirement and made major decisions keeping the long-term goal in focus. Gambhir has previously praised Agarkar for taking tough decisions during the rebuild phase.

Hence, if feedback is sought from Gautam Gambhir, it will only benefit Agarkar. Overall, the ball remains in the BCCI's court as they prepare for a key hurdle.
