India young pacer Mayank Yadav made a dream return to international cricket after a long injury break.

Playing his 1st match for India since October 2024, the speedster delivered a match-winning performance against Zimbabwe in the 1st T20I at Harare. As a result, he was named Player of the Match for his stunning spell.

Meanwhile, India legend Ravichandran Ashwin strongly defended Mayank Yadav and hit back at people who constantly question the youngster over his injury record.

R Ashwin Defends Mayank Yadav Against Critics

After Mayank's impressive comeback, R Ashwin praised the pacer's determination. At the same time, he spoke about the mental and physical challenges that come with serious injuries like stress fractures.

"It is not easy to go through a stress fracture at a young age. We often see and think, why is he always retained? He is always injured. We easily tell this. No player plays to get injured. Injury can be very painful.

It is not just physical but also a mental barrier, especially if you are injured twice. It is not easy on the body. If it resurfaces, it plays on your mind. Mayank Yadav has a lot of time and is exceptionally talented. I want him to play more," he said on 'Ash ki Baat'.

Mayank Yadav’s Majestic Return Against Zimbabwe

Notably, Mayank Yadav could not have asked for a better comeback. Notably, he finished with magnificent figures of 2 for 18 in his 4-over spell and played a major role in India's comfortable win.

Moreover, he made an immediate impact by taking a wicket with the very 1st ball of the match. Throughout his spell, he almost consistently bowled at speeds of over 145 kmph and troubled the Zimbabwe batters with both pace and accuracy.

R Ashwin Congratulates Shreyas Iyer

Apart from praising Mayank, Ashwin also congratulated India captain Shreyas Iyer for registering his first T20I win as skipper. In addition, he appreciated India's young pace attack for making full use of the opportunity against Zimbabwe.

"Congratulations to Shreyas for the first win. He would have been searching for it. There is not a lot to see when you restrict Zimbabwe to 120-odd. Mayank, Prince, and Ashok all got an opportunity," R Ashwin said.

Mayank Yadav Shows Signs Of Growth

Although Mayank's raw pace remains his biggest strength, he now looks like a much smarter bowler.

During IND vs ZIM 1st T20I, he mixed up his lengths well and adjusted his plans according to the conditions instead of relying only on speed. Moreover, he looked confident despite returning after a frustrating period filled with injuries that limited his appearances over the past 2 IPL seasons.

Notably, his opening spell gave India complete control of the game as he removed top-order batters early and kept Zimbabwe under pressure throughout the Powerplay.

With India leading the three-match T20I series, Mayank Yadav will now look to continue his excellent form in the second T20I.
