Ayush Badoni scores double hundred vs Jharkhand [Source: X]
Delhi captain Ayush Badoni is continuing to make a mark in the Ranji Trophy, leading the team from the front. In just the third match of the season, the middle-order batter has gone past 500 runs, while racking up double centuries in successive matches.
Badoni has already been in and around the India setup for a while and also recently featured for North Zone in the Duleep Trophy. As a spin-bowling allrounder, Badoni was also called up to the Indian team in the past year, before management zeroed in on Naman Dhir.
Ayush Badoni grabs headlines in Ranji Trophy Round 3
Leading up to Delhi's ongoing match against Jharkhand, Ayush Badoni scored 23 and 85 against Bengal in the season opener, as their best batter. He followed it with a mammoth 217 in just 246 balls in the next match against Gujarat.
As Delhi continues to search for their first outright win of the season, the right-hand batter took the onus upon himself and started Day 1 with a big score. In just over four sessions in the match in Ranchi, Delhi scored 515/5 before declaring. Notably, 210*(228) have come off Badoni after he walked in to bat at 123/3.
With this, the Delhi number 5 became the first batter across Ranji Trophy Elite Groups to go past 500 runs. As things stand, he averages 172 in this season, with still an innings left in the match against Jharkhand.
Can Badoni break into Indian Test team?
After his second double hundred of the season, Badoni has scored 2426 First Class runs in 42 innings and he averages 63.84 for 11 fifties and 6 centuries. These are exemplary numbers for any FC batter; nonetheless, he bats at number 4 or 5, but when it comes to the Indian team, the middle-order is packed with regulars.
In the India A team, Yash Rathod and R Smaran, who were the leading run-getters in the past two Ranji Trophy seasons, respectively are competing for the same spot. So, Badoni will have to wait for his opportunity to pop-up.
With off-spin at his disposal, he will has an extra dimension to his game and if he continues to bat at this average, his time will evetually come, at least for India A.
