Sydney Sixers captain Ashleigh Gardner on Sunday (November 1) smashed nine sixes and 10 fours in a scintillating 60-ball 124 during Match 7 of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 2026 at Drummoyne Oval, Sydney.

It was the first century of WBBL 2026, as Gardner, troubled by off-field controversies of late, made all the headlines. Overall, it was her second century in the competiton, and it came during her 147th WBBL match.

Ashleigh Gardner Recovers Sydney Sixers From 6/3

Batting first, Sydney Sixers lost both their openers Sophia Dunkley and Ellyse Perry early at Drummoyne Oval. Amelia Kerr too lost her wicket quickly, as Sydney slipped to 6/3 out of nowhere.

Then came Ashleigh Gardner and led by example, and wicket-keeper Alice Capsey gave the support she desperately required after coming to bat at No. 5. The Australian all-rounder took 51 balls to get to a three-digit mark before finishing on 124 to reach new heights.

Here're the milestones Gardner achieved with a stunning WBBL 2026 century:

  • The first WBBL century of the season
  • Her second-ever WBBL hundred
  • Her highest-ever score in T20 format
  • The 4th-highest score in WBBL history after Lizelle Lee’s 150*, Grace Harris’ 136* and Meg Lanning’s 135

Thanks to her, Sydney Sixers finished with 196/8 after slipping to 6/3 at one point.

Has Gardner Led Sydney To WBBL Title Yet?

A veteran of many success for Australia's international dominance, Gardner has been playing for Sydney Sixers since the beginning of her WBBL career, in 2015/16. Even though she was with Sydney Sixers in 2016/17 and 2017/18 when they won the title in successive seasons, she did not become the leader of the side back then.

Back then, Ellyse Perry was their captain in the Women’s Big Bash League, and she led them to win on both seasons.

Gardner has now 2876 runs in the WBBL history, striking at 122.48. She also has 123 wickets at an average of 21.89 while maintaining an economy rate of 7.14.
