Sydney Thunder have made a huge announcement ahead of the new Big Bash League (BBL) season. They have announced a new head coach to replace Trevor Bayliss after Thunder finished last on the BBL 2025-26 points table with only 2 wins from 10 matches and only 4 points.

And the new head coach of the Sydney Thunders will be the ex-England captain Andrew Flintoff. The franchise has called Flintoff’s signing "the most significant off-field acquisition in club history."

Andrew Flintoff and his BBL connection

Andrew Flintoff succeeds Trevor Bayliss, the former England ODI World Cup winner who left Thunder after five years in charge, including a trip to the BBL final in 2024–2025.

However, during Bayliss's leadership, Thunder finished last in the 2023–24 and 2025–26 seasons.

Having participated in seven games with the Brisbane Heat during the 2014–15 season, Flintoff does have BBL playing experience. One of the greatest all-rounders in the game, Andrew Flintoff, was dissatisfied with his brief time as a BBL player despite having concluded his career with 350 wickets and over 9000 runs in first-class cricket.

"I can't wait to get over there”—Andrew Flintoff

According to reports, the 48-year-old Flintoff defeated competition from Dan Christian and Shane Watson to accept a two-year contract with the Sydney-based team.

"I can't wait to get over there and get started. I'm looking at this with a lot of optimism. You look at the franchise, you look at the players, you look at the support, and I think there's something really big to build on. "

"You look at the squad, and it's a real nice mix. You've got David Warner, Chris Green, and Daniel Sams—some of these older guys are established cricketers, and you just want to provide an environment where they can go out there and flourish."

I want our players to connect with the people that come and see us. I want them to enjoy playing cricket. However, all that is underpinned by hard work... I want them to play with passion and leave everything out there on the field. "

"You look around the world now, and everyone gets the opportunity to play for all different teams, but one of my aims over time with Sydney Thunder is that every player looks back thinking, "That's the best part of the year; that's a team that I want to play for,” Flintoff was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

Andrew Flintoff’s previous coaching experience

Andrew Flintoff is considered to be one of the best all-rounders produced by England. He played 79 Tests, 141 ODIs, and 7 T20Is for England from 1998 to 2010. He made 3845 Test runs and took 226 wickets in the format. In ODIs, he has 3394 runs and 169 wickets, while in T20Is, he made 76 runs and took 5 wickets.

Having led Northern Superchargers to two top-four finishes from the bottom of the table in The Hundred, this will be his first coaching position abroad.

Additionally, he was a consultant to England's white-ball teams under Matt Mott in 2023–2024 and coached the England Lions squad throughout their most recent travels.
