Ajit Agarkar's Future Uncertain; BCCI Silent On Contract Extension

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar's future at the BCCI seems uncertain at the moment. The former fast bowler currently serves as the chairman of the BCCI men's selection committee, having assumed the office back in July 2023. 

Ajit Agarkar replaced Chetan Sharma as the chief selector after the latter resigned from his role in 2023. While he has been one of the most influential decision-makers in Indian cricket in recent times, Agarkar has yet to be assured of his contract extension by the BCCI. 

BCCI yet to hold talks with Ajit Agarkar regarding contract extension

According to the latest report by RevSportz, the BCCI has yet to initiate discussions with Ajit Agarkar around the extension of his contract as the chief selector. 

Agarkar was initially appointed for a three-year period in 2023, eventually getting a three-month extension in June 2026. 

But with only five days left for the official termination of his contract, neither Ajit Agarkar has approached the board nor the BCCI has contacted him for an extension. 

“Nobody has approached Agarkar yet (as regards extension), and he hasn’t approached anyone. Let’s see how it pans out in the coming days," a source was quoted as saying by RevSportz.

Earlier, a report from Express Sports claimed that the BCCI would hold talks with the former Indian cricketer regarding a possible one-year extension. However, with both Agarkar and the BCCI not initiating formal discussions, it won't be surprising if the former gets replaced as the chief selector after his contract terminates. 

Team India's performance during Ajit Agarkar's tenure as BCCI chief selector

The Indian team attained great heights in white-ball cricket during Ajit Agarkar's stint as the chairman of the BCCI selection committee. After qualifying for the final of the 2023 World Cup, India clinched their second T20 World Cup title in the Caribbean in 2024. 

Led by Rohit Sharma, the Indian team also won the Champions Trophy in 2025 before retaining the T20 World Cup under Suryakumar Yadav's leadership in 2026. However, while Agarkar was a defining figure in India's dominance in ODIs and T20Is, his tenure coincided with the team's abysmal performance in red-ball cricket. 

During his stint as the BCCI chief selector, the Indian Test side blew hot and cold, conceding embarrassing clean sweeps to New Zealand and South Africa on home soil. The torrid run at home ensured India couldn't qualify for the WTC final for the first time in the history of the championship. 

Controversies and shambolic UK tour made Agarkar's life tough at BCCI

While Agarkar collaboratively worked with the Indian team, facilitating the transition process, his 'non-committal' remark on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma earned him massive backlash from all corners. 

Agarkar had stated that Kohli and Rohit were non-committal for the 2027 World Cup. But interestingly, Kohli later countered the argument, saying he wouldn't be still grinding in the nets and keeping himself supremely fit had he lost the hunger to represent the Men in Blue in the marquee event. 

On a similar note, a member of the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee had reportedly told Rohit Sharma that the three-match series in England would be his final appearance in the format. The report created massive uproar in India, forcing BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia to issue a clarification, confirming Rohit's existence in the World Cup 2027 plans. 

The former fast bowler also found himself in the firing line when the BCCI decided to conduct a performance review after India conceded shambolic defeats to Ireland and England on the UK tour. 

Thus, the selection committee has reportedly not been on the same page with the BCCI as far as its way of dealing with the legendary batting duo is concerned. Apart from the team's dismal performance in Tests and, of late, in T20Is, this could be a prominent reason for Agarkar's termination if the BCCI doesn't hold talks with its existing chief selector.
