Ajinkya Rahane Finally Breaks Silence On KKR vs PBKS IPL Toss Blunder

After Ajinkya Rahane made a major toss blunder during the abandoned Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) vs Punjab Kings (PBKS) IPL clash a few days ago, a wave of backlash stormed the internet. The Kolkata Knight Riders skipper had to face criticism without presenting his side, since the match was washed out due to rain.

During the KKR vs LSG clash at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on April 9, Ajinkya Rahane came out for the toss again and this time responded to his controversial decision from the stormy April 6 night.

What blunder did Rahane make?

It was an overcast evening in Kolkata during the KKR vs PBKS IPL clash, and after winning the toss, Ajinkya Rahane chose to bat first, an unpopular decision given the conditions favouring the chasing side.

The pitch had a patchy green surface with small cracks and moisture, which would have assisted both seamers and spinners early on, making it difficult for batters to get consistent bounce.

Additionally, the overcast conditions indicated a high chance of rain, meaning the DLS method could have come into play and potentially favoured Kolkata Knight Riders at their home ground.

Despite these factors, Rahane opted to bat first. The decision backfired early as two quick wickets fell, with Xavier Bartlett dismissing Finn Allen and Cameron Green.

Eventually, the match was abandoned due to heavy rain, and one point each was awarded to both teams. Although it ended in an anti-climax, fans did not miss the chance to criticise Rahane’s captaincy.

However, on April 9, Rahane finally addressed the situation with a one-line response to his controversial decision. During the toss, he lost again, as opposition skipper Rishabh Pant opted to bowl first.

This time, Rahane appeared positive about bowling, especially since the weather and pitch conditions were similar to the previous match.

When asked about his earlier decision to bat first, Rahane gave a sarcastic reply, “That match did not get over, so you never know.” While humorous, his comment implied that the outcome could have justified his decision, or alternatively, it was simply a self-aware remark on his earlier call.

KKR fields Chakaravarthy-less Playing XI against LSG

Meanwhile, Kolkata received a boost with Sunil Narine returning to the playing XI after missing the previous game due to severe abdominal pain during practice.

However, Varun Chakaravarthy remained unavailable as he continues to recover from a finger injury sustained while taking a catch against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Ajinkya Rahane also confirmed Chakaravarthy’s injury during the toss. “Sunil (Narine) comes in for Blessing (Muzarabani). Varun (Chakaravarthy) is still recovering from his hand injury.”

Meanwhile, Blessing Muzarabani was also benched, with Rovman Powell coming in as a replacement, marking his debut for KKR in IPL 2026 after missing the earlier clash against the Punjab Kings.
