Abishek Porel's promising cricket career has taken a major turn after the Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter became embroiled in a criminal case in West Bengal.

The 23-year-old has been facing allegations made by a medical student, with the matter eventually reaching the Calcutta High Court after concerns were raised over the progress of the police investigation.

Porel, who has represented Bengal and Delhi Capitals in domestic and IPL cricket, has denied the allegations. However, the legal proceedings have now entered a more serious phase following the latest court development.

Abishek Porel sent to 14-day judicial custody

The Chinsurah court on Friday, August 14, denied bail to Abishek Porel and sent the cricketer to 14 days of judicial custody after his three-day police remand ended.

Porel was arrested earlier this week following a direction from the Calcutta High Court and was subsequently produced before the Chinsurah court, which granted police custody for three days.

With that remand period now over, the court rejected his bail plea and ordered judicial custody as the investigation into the allegations continues.

It is important to note that the allegations against Porel have not been proved in court, and the cricketer has denied wrongdoing. Therefore, the latest development should not be interpreted as a conviction.

Why was Abishek Porel not granted bail?

The case against Porel originated from a complaint filed at Mogra Police Station on June 23 by a medical student from Karnataka.

According to the complaint, the woman alleged that she had been in a relationship with Porel for around three-and-a-half years and accused him of establishing a physical relationship with her after promising marriage.

She has also alleged physical and mental abuse, threats and misuse of private photographs and videos.

The matter subsequently reached the Calcutta High Court after the complainant raised concerns about the progress of the investigation. The High Court directed police to apprehend Porel and another accused and ordered the seizure of electronic devices, including phones and laptops, amid concerns surrounding alleged private material.

Porel was eventually arrested on August 11 and initially sent to three days of police custody. The legal process is still ongoing, and the allegations remain allegations unless established through the judicial process.

Will Abishek Porel be able to play IPL 2027?

Porel's immediate legal situation could have a significant impact on his cricketing career, but it would be premature to declare that he has already been ruled out of IPL 2027.

The most important distinction is between being accused, being undertrial and being convicted. If Porel remains an undertrial and is eventually granted bail, there is no automatic rule that a pending criminal case by itself means he is permanently ineligible to play the IPL. 

However, any bail conditions, court orders or restrictions on his movement would have to be considered before he could participate.

The situation would become substantially different if Porel were convicted by a trial court. In that scenario, the conviction and sentence would remain operative unless a higher appellate court suspends or stays the conviction. 

There is also a separate disciplinary dimension. The BCCI has the power to take disciplinary action independently of the criminal court process. Its regulations allow for suspension of participants during disciplinary proceedings, meaning a player's availability cannot be determined solely by whether a criminal trial has concluded.

At present, there is no basis to state that Abishek Porel has been convicted or automatically banned from IPL 2027.
