Indian Cricket is going through a difficult time in red-ball cricket. The Shubman Gill-led side have struggled since Gautam Gambhir took over in July 2024. The former India opener has enjoyed success in white-ball cricket, but his Test record as a coach with India is something not to boast about.

Over the years, the World Test Championship (WTC) has emerged as the biggest Test triumph, and India have come close twice. Team India suffered heartbreaking defeats in the 2021 and 2023 WTC finals.

India’s Test Performance Under Gautam Gambhir

When Gautam Gambhir took over as India coach, the Shubman Gill-led side were on course for their WTC final as the team required just 3 wins in their remaining 7 matches. However, India suffered a whitewash at home against New Zealand and lost the BGT 1-4.

Gambhir’s first Test assignment as India’s head coach came at home against Bangladesh, an it started positively with a 2-0 win over the Tigers. Since then, Gambhir has coached India in 7 Test series - 5 Home and 2 away.

India have lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia and tied the 5-match series against England (2-2). Now, talking about the home series, India have won only against West Indies and a one-off Test against Afghanistan.

Conclusion

If we look at the four Asian Teams, then India have a win percentage of 40%. Compared to the other teams, then Sri Lanka and Pakistan are doing even worse than India. Sri Lanka have a win percentage of 30.7% (the lowest), while Pakistan have 33.33 (the 2nd lowest).

Meanwhile, Bangladesh has been the best-performing Asian side in the last two years with a win percentage of 47.05%. The Tigers are also doing well in Australia and are on course of registering their first-ever Test win on Australian soil.
