Abhishek Sharma stormed back into form with an unthinkable innings in a local cricket match in Punjab. Opening the innings for the Amritsar Men’s Senior team, the explosive left-handed batter blasted an electrifying double century as his team mounted over 500 runs in a 50-over game. 

The 25-year-old came up with this thunderous masterclass mere days after returning home from a disastrous T20I tour of Zimbabwe.

Batting first in a Punjab State Inter-District Senior One Day Limited Overs Tournament of the 2026 season, Amritsar Men’s Senior team mounted 533-8 in 50 overs at the Gandhi Grounds in Amritsar.

Opening batter Abhishek Sharma himself slapped 233 runs off just 91 balls with 15 boundaries and 25 huge sixes. 

The 25-year-old shared a scorching 305-run opening partnership with half-centurion Abhay Choudhary in just 24.4 overs, before the left-hander got dismissed by Tarn Taran Men’s Senior bowler Ashish Lowrance.

Abhinav Sharma at number five also listed an electrifying half-century, while Sahil Sharma scored quick runs to turbo-charge the Amritsar Men’s Senior team innings in the slog overs.

A morale-boosting knock for Abhishek before Asian Games

Abhishek Sharma has not been in the best of form for Team India in recent times. In the recently-concluded three-match series in Zimbabwe, the attacking left-hander minted just 11 runs in three innings at a dismal average of 3.67.

Moreover, in the 10 matches he played across Ireland, England and Zimbabwe over the last couple of months, Abhishek accrued just 191 runs in 10 innings with a solitary half-century. 

A prolific IPL 2026 season for the SRH franchise aside, the champion opener could amass just two fifties in eight innings during India’s triumphant 2026 T20 World Cup run at home earlier this year. 

So, Abhishek's whirlwind knock against the Tarn Taran Men’s Senior team may well have injected him with a much-needed confidence booster before the upcoming 2026 Asian Games in Japan. It is worth noting that despite his repeated struggles, Abhishek Sharma found a place in the Indian squad for the much-awaited multi-nation event.

Why Asian Games 2026 carry extra significance for Abhishek Sharma

The upcoming 2026 Asian Games tour of Japan could well be a make-or-break tournament for Abhishek Sharma. 

With Team India resting Sanju Samson from the Zimbabwe tour, young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi walked away with a ‘Player of the Series’ award at the age of just 15. 

Sooryavanshi’s senior partner Abhishek, however, scored just 11 runs in three innings of the tour to add to his dreadful tours of Ireland and England. With Samson waiting in the wings and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi taking huge strides in international cricket already, it is imperative for Abhishek to make the 2026 Asian Games count. 

Moreover, players like uncapped Prabhsimran Singh, in-form Ishan Kishan, among others, are also knocking on selection doors for that elusive opening slot for Team India.
