The road to the Lanka Premier League 2026 final narrows to one last hurdle as Galle Gallants and Colombo Kaps lock horns in Qualifier 2 at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Friday. With one team destined to keep its title dream alive and the other left to rue missed opportunities, the contest promises to be a battle of composure, courage, and clutch performances. After weeks of fierce competition, only 40 overs separate these two sides from a coveted place in the championship decider.
Dasun Shanaka-led Galle Gallants finished second on the points table with five wins from eight matches. They are coming into this fixture after suffering a defeat at the hands of table-topper Jaffna Kings in Qualifier 1. The game was very high-scoring, with 470 runs scored across both innings.
Batting first, Jaffna Kings posted a mammoth 242/2 with opener Kamil Mishara smashing a brilliant 108* off 55 balls. His ton comprised 17 boundaries, including 7 sixes. Khawaja Nafay and Towhid Hridoy posted 54 each to take their side over the 240-run mark. None of the Galle bowlers made an impact, including their skipper Shanaka, who leaked 56 runs in his four overs. However, spinner Tharindu Ratnayake went wicketless but did prove economical on that flat Colombo strip.
In reply, Galle lost their Aussie opener Thomas Rogers in the first over but then Sam Harper (44) and Charith Asalanka (27) added 75 runs for the second wicket. After that, Galle lost a few quick wickets but Chamika Karunaratne (39) and skipper Shanaka (34) stitched a 63-run stand for the fifth wicket. Tailenders Dinura Kalupahana and Sachindu Colombage made a quickfire and unbeaten 20-odd each but all this effort was not enough as Galle could manage 228/8 and eventually lost the match by 14 runs.
Colombo Kaps, meanwhile, come into this contest after beating Kandy Royals comprehensively by 68 runs in the Eliminator. Batting first, Kaps scored 203/7 on the back of Ben McDermott's brilliant 71 off 39 balls. An onslaught by Jimmy Neesham (42*) and Janith Liyanage (32) in the death overs helped Kaps touch the 200-run mark.
In reply, despite opener Lahiru Igalagamage's fifty, Kandy Royals were all out for 135 inside 19 overs. Five Colombo bowlers, namely Wanuja Sahan, Shahnawaz Dahani, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Malsha Tharupathi and Milan Rathnayaka, picked up two scalps apiece to close the match. Sahan was exceptional as he gave only eight runs in his four-over spell.
Both teams have met twice this season and Galle won on both occasions. In the first game, Kaps batted first and scored 189/8 on the back of half-centuries by Kusal Mendis and Ben McDermott. Later, Galle chased it down in the final over on the back of fine knocks by Sam Harper (65) and Sahan Arachchige (38*), with five wickets in hand.
The second game was also a close one and high scoring too. Batting first, Galle posted 201/6 with Charith Asalanka scoring a half-century. In reply, some of the Kaps did get a start but couldn't convert it into something big and the side was eventually all out for 188 in the final over, thanks to Galle's overseas spin all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz's figures of 3/24.
