The mix turned out positive for the co-hosts, as all the top six batters made significant contributions, helping India post the second-highest team total in the history of T20 World Cups.
On that note, let's take a look at the list of highest team totals in T20 World Cups.
List of the highest team totals in T20 World Cups
#1 Sri Lanka 260/6 vs Kenya in 2007
It was minnow-bashing at its best when Sri Lanka smashed 260/6 against Kenya in the Group ‘C’ match in the T20 World Cup 2007. Veteran Sanath Jayasuriya led the way with 88 off 44 balls, and captain Mahela Jayawardene blasted 65 off 28 before Jehan Mubarak smashed an unbeaten 46 from 13 balls at the end.
Moreover, Left-handed Mubarak took 29 runs off the 19th over bowled by seamer Lameck Ngoche as Sri Lanka, surpassing the then-highest team total in the ICC events. Sri Lanka further thrashed hapless Kenya by 172 runs, securing the biggest Twenty20 victory among full-time nations.

On February 26, 2026, Suryakumar Yadav-led India, in their Super 8 clash of the T20 World Cup 2026 against Zimbabwe, posted 256/4 on the board. The huge total was orchestrated by a tremendous start by openers Sanju Samson (24 off 25) and Abhishek Sharma (55 off 30). Ishan Kishan and skipper Suryakumar Yadav simply followed suit with their stay at the crease. But the real boost to the engine was provided by the all-rounder Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma.
#3 West Indies 254/6 vs Zimbabwe in 2026
On February 23, 2026, West Indies put on a six-fest against Zimbabwe in the T20 World Cup 2026. Led by turbo-charged fifties from Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell, West Indies racked up 254 for 6, the third-highest total at a men's T20 World Cup, including 19 sixes. Notably, no team has hit more sixes in an innings in the history of the competition.
Moreover, Hetmyer's strike rate of 329.41 is the second-highest among batters to have scored 50-plus runs against spinners in a men's T20I, where ball-by-ball data is available.
#4 Ireland 235/5 vs Oman in 2026
Lorcan Tucker’s blazing, unbeaten 94 led the way for Ireland’s thumping over Oman in the T20 World Cup 2026, as they piled on 235 for 5, the fourth highest by any team in T20 World Cups.
It was also the highest total for Ireland in T20Is, and Tucker's 94* was also the highest score by an Irish batter in a T20 World Cup game.
#5 England 230/8 vs South Africa in 2016
Anyone who saw the England vs South Africa Super 10 match in the 2016 T20 World Cup would’ve hardly thought that they were witnessing an anti-climax. South Africa amassed 229/4 in the allotted 20 overs. England hit 21 runs off Kagiso Rabada's first over and signalled their intentions straightaway.
The carnage ended in the 20th over when Moeen Ali hit one to the long off to overhaul South Africa's total, amassing 230-8. The totals scored by England and South Africa are the fifth and sixth highest team totals in T20 World Cups.
