Nitish Kumar Reddy has been ruled out of the upcoming white-ball tours to Ireland and England. Suryansh Shedge has replaced him in the squads as a like-for-like replacement.

Shedge wasn’t around the Indian setup not too long ago, but his recent rise has been immense. After impressing in limited chances with Punjab Kings in the IPL, he continued his good run in the tri-series in Sri Lanka.

Why Suryansh Shedge was fast-tracked into the Indian team

A notable feature about Suryansh Shedge was his ability to whack shorter lengths against pace in the IPL. In IPL 2026, Shedge had a strike rate of 190 and hit a boundary every 3.33 deliveries against lengths shorter than 8 meters.

Against pace overall, he struck at 153.57 and hit a boundary every 4.66 balls while batting in the lower order. Then the all-rounder is also a quick starter.

In the first 10 balls, Shedge had a strike rate of 192.30 and a balls-per-boundary ratio of 3.71 this IPL season. He hit nine sixes in 52 balls during this phase.

He had also consistently played this role for his domestic side, Mumbai. Overall, in his T20 career, Suryansh Shedge has played around 69.56% of his innings at No.6 or below.

He has 270 runs at an average of 33.75 and a strike rate of 187.50 in 16 innings, including a fifty, in these spots. He hits a boundary every fourth delivery.

So, the Mumbai all-rounder is built for this tricky job and has found ample success in the recent past. To play the finisher role at No.6 or below, India needed a player with these attributes.

Bowling credentials

Suryansh Shedge didn’t contribute with the ball for Punjab Kings in IPL 2026. He didn’t even bowl a solitary over.

However, the 23-year-old has a knack for picking wickets, as visible by his record for Mumbai. Playing for his domestic side, Shedge has 13 wickets at 26.84 runs apiece.

While being expensive at times, he picks a wicket every 17.92 deliveries with the ball. So, there’s enough bowling value to build on.

The only issue is that Shedge hasn’t bowled consistently at the IPL level and will need more exposure before developing into a better pacer. Fortunately for him, this team management has shown a liking for such players and will work on his bowling progress.

The likes of Shivam Dube and Nitish Kumar Reddy were also nowhere close to decent bowlers initially. But both of them have made rapid progress, and Shedge can replicate the same under Morne Morkel and other support staff.

Big chance for Suryansh Shedge to reinforce his spot

As much talent India have, the pace-bowling all-rounders are still not readily available. The options are still limited in this category in the domestic setup.

Unfortunately for India, the two most developed all-rounders, Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy, are highly injury-prone and often spend ample time on the sidelines. At the moment, both are out of action, forcing India to try newer players.

Hence, Suryansh Shedge might get a few matches on the Ireland and England tour. A few impressive performances here will strengthen his case, and he will be considered more for the selection later in white-ball formats.

With India preparing for the World Cup 2027, they will be cautious about the workload of Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy. Hence, Suryansh Shedge will gain enough exposure in the coming times.

He has form on his side and couldn’t have found a better time to break into the Indian side. The attributes are encouraging, and with India’s options limited. Shedge could well become one of the mainstays in the all-rounders’ department.
