The IPL 2026 is just around the corner, as ten teams will fight it out for the coveted trophy. The league will commence on March 28, and all eyes will be on the defending champions, RCB, as they take on the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the opening fixture. RCB has built a strong squad, and they will aim to retain their crown.
The star-studded RCB unit captured their maiden IPL title last season, and with quite a few key additions in the mini auction, the Red Army will be looking to replicate the same form that they showed last year.
With the IPL 2026 season starting in a few days' time, we analyse RCB’s strengths and weaknesses, while also decoding the threats and opportunities to their campaign.

(RCB batters strike rates in IPL 2025)
This was how the RCB batters delivered in the IPL 2025 season, with each batter contributing immensely. Rajat Patidar had the lowest strike rate (143), and Kohli struck at 144, while the rest had a strike rate of over 150, with Romario Shepherd nearly touching the 300 mark.
All the batters contributed to RCB’s success as the team boasts one of the most destructive top seven, and adding Venkatesh Iyer, Jacob Bethell, and Jordan Cox, the team has solid bench strength as well.
Match-winners in the team
Before 2025, RCB’s team was heavily dependent on Virat Kohli, and the big names (Du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell, Chris Gayle, and AB De Villiers). However, last season, something changed. Each match produced a different match-winner, and the dependence on Kohli was reduced.
RCB had 9 different match-winners in the IPL 2025 season. In every game, there was a different Man of the Match, as everyone stepped up when it mattered the most. In some games, the batters performed, while in others, the bowlers delivered the goods.
The core of the title-winning team has been retained, and we expect the same trend to continue in IPL 2026.
RCB is certainly sweating hard on star pacer Josh Hazlewood, as the player has not played a competitive match for a while due to an injury. He is RCB’s lead bowler, and the Aussie pacer finished last season with 22 wickets as he helped the team clinch the title.
If Hazlewood is unable, RCB will have a big problem on their hands. Apart from him, there is Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the squad, and while he still instills confidence in the team, the others don’t. There is also no certainty about Yash Dayal’s participation in the IPL 2026 season, and the bowling department looks a bit weak on paper.
Opportunities for RCB
Create history and join MI, CSK in elusive feat
The defending champions, RCB, have a great opportunity to join MI, and CSK in a huge feat. If they manage to retain their title, the Rajat Patidar-led side will become just the third team after the two names mentioned to win back-to-back IPL championships.
CSK won the IPL in 2010, and they retained their crown in 2011. Similarly, MI won in 2019, and 2020 to attain the feat. Now, RCB also has the same chance to enter an elusive list by winning the title in the upcoming campaign.
Threats for RCB
Injuries to key players
RCB’s best bowler, Josh Hazlewood, is injured, and currently, there is no timeline for his return. Without him, the attack looks weak as he is the leader of the bowling unit, and all the responsibility will lie on the shoulders of Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
Apart from him, Tim David is also nursing a hamstring injury, and he has not played competitive cricket since January 2026. He is RCB’s main finisher, and the team will miss his services if the Aussie gets ruled out of the marquee event.
Can RCB live up to the weight of expectations?
Last season, nobody expected RCB to clinch the title, but against all odds, they dominated the tournament and won their maiden IPL championship. This year, their squad has certainly been upgraded, and hence, fans are expecting them to once again deliver the goods and win back-to-back IPL tournaments.
However, there is a good chance that despite being the favourites, RCB could crumble under the weight of expectations from the fans.
