Ravindra Jadeja. [Source - AP]Rajasthan Royals made a surprising tactical call during Qualifier 2 after electing to bat first against Gujarat Titans. The franchise promoted Ravindra Jadeja to No.4 inside the powerplay ahead of regular middle-order batter and captain Riyan Parag. The move instantly became a major talking point among fans and viewers watching the knockout clash. Many questioned why RR would send Jadeja so early at number 4 in such a high-pressure match while Parag remained waiting in the dugout. At first glance, the decision certainly looked unusual. However, once the match context, player roles and tactical side of the situation are analysed properly, Rajasthan Royals’ move appears far more calculated than many initially assumed during the game. Ravindra Jadeja’s record at No.4 proves RR’s move was not illogical One of the biggest reasons behind Ravindra Jadeja’s promotion to number four against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026 Qualifier 2 should not be treated as a panic reaction is Jadeja’s actual IPL record at No.4. His highest score at No.4, an unbeaten 77 off 45 balls, also came during his previous outing in the role. Teams like RCB have successfully used Krunal Pandya similarly this season whenever early wickets fell. RR simply used Jadeja’s versatility to stabilize a collapsing innings without completely killing momentum. Delaying Riyan Parag’s entry against GT’s powerplay attack made tactical sense Another key factor behind the move was the match situation itself. Rajasthan Royals had already lost Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel inside the opening two overs, meaning the innings was suddenly under massive pressure against the tournament’s strongest new-ball attack. Sending Riyan Parag immediately into that situation may not have been the smartest tactical decision, especially considering his fitness status. Parag is evidently not fully fit but is still playing due to his commitment as captain during such a crucial stage of the tournament. Jadeja’s calmness and experience made him a much safer option during the toughest phase of the innings. Parag’s natural strengths are also more suited to middle-overs where he can rotate strike, attack spin and build momentum gradually. RR’s thinking was likely to first stabilize the innings through Jadeja before allowing Parag to enter once conditions became slightly more manageable. Rajasthan Royals’ decision had clear tactical reasoning behind it At first glance, Ravindra Jadeja batting at 4 ahead of Riyan Parag inside the powerplay looked extremely surprising during such a massive knockout encounter. The decision naturally raised questions among fans because it went against Rajasthan Royals’ usual batting structure. However, RR’s move was not random or completely out of nowhere. Jadeja’s strong record at No.4, his experience handling pressure situations and Gujarat Titans’ dangerous powerplay attack all likely influenced the tactical call from the management heavily. Meanwhile, delaying Parag’s entry also reduced the risk of exposing an not fully fit captain to the hardest batting conditions possible. Whether successful or not, Rajasthan Royals’ strategy certainly had cricketing logic and tactical reasoning behind the unexpected promotion.
