Holding one of the youngest cores among all teams in the IPL 2026 landscape, the Punjab Kings franchise appears to be firmly investing into its future. As evidenced by the player retention and the IPL 2026 auction, the current Punjab Kings ensemble features several uncapped Indian players, and even young overseas stars like Cooper Connolly and Marco Jansen among others.
And yet, even with such a progressive setup, the natural passage of time and shifting career arcs often open the doors to potential farewells. For Punjab Kings, the upcoming IPL 2026 season could very well mark the final chapters for a few seasoned names, including one particular Indian spinner currently out of contention for a national return.
Here, we analyse as many as three Punjab Kings cricketers who can announce their retirement, either from the IPL or from cricket overall, following the conclusion of IPL 2026 this year.
IPL 2026- Punjab Kings' Retirement Candidates
1. Marcus Stoinis
Marcus Stoinis has already announced his retirement from ODI cricket for Australia, doing so well before the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. He was never really in the mix for Test cricket either, with his recent ODI retirement effectively making him a T20 exclusive at this stage of his career.

Aged 36 at the moment, the seasoned Australian all-rounder will be pushing 37 by the time of the conclusion of IPL 2026. At such a stage, questions around longevity and workload management might come into play.
A veteran of over 350 T20 matches, including 87 for Australia and appearances across numerous T20 tournaments all over the world, Marcus Stoinis is also prone to excessive travelling.
With the rise of promising T20 leagues around the world, including the one brewing in New Zealand, the two-time World Cup winner for Australia might at least contemplate retiring from the IPL in a bid to continue in other, lesser demanding leagues.
| Criterion | IPL 2025 | IPL 2024 | IPL 2023 |
| Innings | 11 | 14 | 15 |
| Runs | 160 | 388 | 408 |
| Average | 26.66 | 32.33 | 31.38 |
| Strike-rate | 186.04 | 147.52 | 150.00 |
That said, his IPL performance, however, remains impeccable. While Stoinis did not receive as many batting opportunities with the Punjab Kings last year, the explosive middle-order batter still maintained a stagger strike rate of nearly 200.
Moreover, even in the preceding two IPL seasons in 2023 and 2024, the veteran Australian all-rounder aggregated nearly 800 runs in just 29 innings for the LSG.
2. Yuzvendra Chahal
Yuzvendra Chahal was among Punjab Kings’ core group of India-based players retained by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2026 auction.
The highest wicket-taker in the history of the IPL by a landslide and the only bowler with over 200 sticks to his name, the star India spinner played a key role in taking Punjab Kings to its first-ever IPL final in over a decade last year.
Despite his sustained dominance in the IPL, Yuzvendra Chahal has been sidelined from India’s white-ball setup in recent times, raising questions over his long-term international future.
| Criterion | Stats |
| Innings | 172 |
| Wickets | 221 |
| Average | 22.76 |
| Economy | 7.96 |
Yet to play a single international for Team India since August 2023, the Haryana cricketer will have little reason to continue in the IPL, especially at a time when his national comeback prospects are increasingly becoming uncertain.
Moreover, Yuzvendra Chahal will also be pushing 36 by the conclusion of the IPL 2026 season, thus reaching a stage where he might consider exploring overseas T20 leagues.
3. Lockie Ferguson
New Zealand speed demon Lockie Ferguson has already confirmed his partial unavailability for Punjab Kings in the IPL 2026 season. The soon-to-be 35-year-old reportedly wants to spend time with his family after New Zealand’s ongoing home T20I series against the visiting South Africans.
Ferguson has also not been a prominent feature in the IPL of late, having played just 14 matches combined across the last three editions of the tournament for teams like KKR, RCB and Punjab Kings. These factors collectively point towards a phase where he could reassess his commitments in franchise cricket.
With plans being developed for a T20 league of their own in New Zealand, Lockie Ferguson could also consider limiting his overseas participation in order to opt for something closer to home.
