Prabhsimran should get India call up based on his recent form [Source: AFP]
The ongoing Sher-E-Punjab T20 tournament has already witnessed some high-quality performances by top players. The likes of Abhishek Sharma and Naman Dhir have lit up the tournament, but there is one more name who has delivered the goods: Prabhsimran Singh.
The hard-hitting opening batter has been excellent in the tournament and has already smacked 311 runs in just three matches, with an astonishing average of 155.50 and a strike rate of 214.48. Prabhsimran continues to dazzle at the highest level, and he could be next in line to make his India T20I debut.
Why India should pick Prabhsimran Singh in the T20I setup?
An explosive top-order batter, Prabhsimran has the ability to take down the bowling with utmost ease. He can dismantle an attack inside the powerplay and has similar attacking instincts as Abhishek Sharma.
Moreover, not only against domestic bowlers. but the right-handed player has tackled some of the best international bowlers with ease in the IPL. In the last two seasons, he has racked up 549 and 510 runs, respectively, with solid strike rates of 160 and 168.
India could do with an explosive opener at the top, and here are the Indian players who could feel the heat if Prabhsimran gets an India call-up.
1) Sanju Samson
Samson was at the top of the world when he was declared the Player of the Tournament in the T20 World Cup 2026. Samson’s individual brilliance helped India retain their World Cup crown, but things went downhill in the aftermath.
He was picked for the UK tour, and disaster struck as he failed to deliver the goods against both Ireland and England.
| Criterion | Vs Ireland | Vs England |
| Matches | 2 | 2 |
| Runs | 5 | 28 |
| Strike rate | 100 | 133.33 |
(Samson stats on the UK tour)
- Just five runs in the two matches against Ireland, followed by 28 runs against the English side, defined Samson’s UK tour. He was dropped midway through the England T20Is and was also not picked for the Zimbabwe tour.
- Samson’s strike rate on that tour was also questionable, as the batter had already faced the heat. Prabhsimran has had better IPL numbers in recent years than Samson, and if he gets included in the Indian T20I setup, the Kerala batter could be shown the exit door, especially if he fails against Afghanistan.
2) Abhishek Sharma
Abhishek’s place in the Indian T20I team has no imminent threat as he still remains the team’s best T20 batter. However, in recent months, India has taken some ruthless decisions, and Abhishek’s slump in 2026 could turn out to be a cause for worry for the BCCI.
The former number one-ranked T20I batter has witnessed a slump in form in 2026, and he even registered three ducks in a row in the T20 World Cup 2026.
After the 2026 T20 World Cup, Abhishek has racked up 332 runs, with an average of 18.4 and a strike rate of 162. Also, in the recently concluded Zimbabwe tour, the southpaw only scored 11 runs in three matches.

He has been facing the heat for quite some time now, and if Prabhsimran gets included in the T20I setup, the southpaw will be one of the players under the firing line.
3) Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi recently made his T20I debut against England, and while he has shown glimpses of his brilliance in patches, English bowlers found ways to exploit his weaknesses. The 15-year-old prodigy did manage to silence his doubters in the Zimbabwe series, but his mode of dismissal against England became a cause for concern.
| Criterion | Data |
| Matches | 3 |
| Runs | 42 |
| Strike rate | 168 |
(Sooryavanshi vs England)
- On a slightly tricky English wicket, the southpaw could only score 42 runs in three matches and couldn’t score runs the way India expected him to do.
The youngster will next be seen in action in the Afghanistan T20Is and the Asian Games 2026. If he fails to deliver in these two series, the doubters will once again rise, and with someone like Prabhsimran Singh, who has been in red-hot form waiting in the wings, the youngster could face serious heat.
Conclusion
For how long can the BCCI not include the in-form Prabhsimran Singh in the India T20I lineup? He has been the star of the Sher-E-Punjab tournament and has been excellent for the Punjab Kings in the IPL as well.
If he gets picked, the likes of Samson, Abhishek, and Sooryavanshi will automatically face the heat, as the trio will need to be at their absolute best to retain their place in the T20I setup.
If Prabhsimran is drafted in and if he delivers the goods, someone needs to be dropped, and the trio (Samson, Abhishek, Vaibhav) cannot afford slip-ups in the upcoming tournaments.
