Is Sanju Samson A Mistake For CSK? Key Takeaways From CSK's Defeat To Punjab Kings

In the early hours of IPL 2026, CSK finds itself in a spot of bother, losing both their opening matches, first to Rajasthan Royals and now to Punjab Kings. The once-mighty Chennai franchise is struggling to find its rhythm, unraveling in front of their home crowd.

The defeat against Punjab, defending a daunting 210, highlighted a fragile bowling unit and a lack of composure under pressure. Despite a promising total, CSK’s bowlers failed to execute their plans as Punjab Kings chased down the target with eight balls to spare.

Sanju Samson's inclusion also raises some serious question, leaving everyone wonder if he is a mistake for CSK. Was the gamble worth it? Here are some of the key takeaways from CSK's defeat to Punjab Kings at Chepauk on Friday.

1. Is Sanju Samson the Right Fit for CSK?

Sanju Samson’s arrival at CSK came with great expectations, especially after his stellar T20 World Cup performance, where he played a key role in India's victory. However, his start at CSK in IPL 2026 has been shaky, failing to deliver in the opening two games.

While his class remains undeniable, Samson’s poor record at CSK’s home ground, MA Chidambaram, cannot be ignored. With just 66 runs from six encounters and an average of 11 at the Chepauk, his struggles in Chennai are a glaring concern for CSK's management.

Looking at his overall consistency:

  • In 127 innings as a top-order batter, Sanju Samson scores a 50+ score every 4.7 innings.
  • Only Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane have a worse rate among active top-order IPL batters with 100+ innings.

To add to the worries, Samson’s role as an opener for CSK is unfamiliar ground. Having opened only seven times in the last five IPL seasons before arriving to CSK, his lack of rhythm in this position in IPL raises doubts about his suitability for the role.

With the explosive Urvil Patel waiting in the wings, whose T20 strike rate stands at 179.47, CSK’s gamble on Samson seems even riskier. Patel’s have scored some of the fastest T20 centuries and as a consistent power hitter, pose a serious challenge to Samson’s place.

2. Away from Home, Shreyas Iyer Reigns Supreme in IPL

Shreyas Iyer has been the heart and soul of Punjab Kings since taking over as captain last year. Leading the franchise to the playoffs for the first time in 11 years, he has pushed them to new heights, including an IPL final appearance.

Coming to last night's game, Punjab Kings have now defeated CSK in Chennai for the fourth consecutive year, with Iyer continuing to shine at the helm twice. The captain’s back-to-back fifties at Chepauk were key, cementing his reputation as a big-game player.

Yet, his greatest strength lies in his relentless form in away games.

  • In away matches since IPL 2025, Iyer has amassed a jaw-dropping 581 runs at a staggering 96.83 average.
  • In total of those 11 away outings, Iyer has managed seven half-centuries and a strike rate of 181.56.

His consistency away from home is unmatched. As Iyer continues his dominance, especially after his fifty in Punjab Kings' first away match in IPL 2026, opponents must brace for a long season ahead while facing the Kings and Iyer behind their own backyard.

3. Defending Totals: CSK's Biggest Weakness Since IPL 2025

If you are chasing against the current CSK side, you might as well consider the game half won. The once-formidable franchise, known for defending totals with ease, now faces a different reality since IPL 2025.

In the last 8 games since IPL 2025, CSK have won only once while bowling second, a meaningless dead rubber against Gujarat Titans. Their failure to defend totals has been glaring, with Punjab Kings chasing down 210 with 8 balls to spare just last night. This is a trend that is rapidly becoming their Achilles' heel.

Numbers tell the full story:

  • CSK’s bowling average drops from 28.3 when bowling first to a dismal 37.97 while defending.
  • In the powerplay, their new-ball bowlers have a strike rate of 32, claiming just one wicket every 5.2 overs while defending a target since IPL 2025.
  • Even their strongest suit, spin bowling, loses effectiveness when defending, with an average of 36.2 in such situations.

If CSK are to bounce back in IPL 2026 from their early losses, improving their bowling while defending totals must be a priority. While the batters have stepped up, going all out, the bowlers’ failures to deliver have neutralised those efforts meaningless. Team success requires balance, in both batting and bowling.
