Is Nahid Rana On Track To Enter Greatest Fast Bowlers' League In Test History?

The Bangladesh cricket team suffered a massive setback as Nahid Rana's injury ruled him out of the Test series against Australia. Nahid sustained a grade-2 left side strain and will require six to eight weeks to recover from the injury. 

Nahid Rana's unavailability is a huge blow to Bangladesh for two key reasons. Firstly, Nahid was in prolific form, scalping the most wickets in international cricket in 2026 before the injury setback. 

Secondly, being a fast bowler capable of hitting the hard length at searing pace, Nahid could've emerged as Bangladesh's wrecker-in-chief on the seam-friendly Australian pitches. 

Nahid has shown red-hot form in Test cricket, scalping 38 wickets since his debut in the longest format. While his immense potential has projected him to join the greatest fast bowlers in Test cricket eventually, is Nahid Rana actually on the right track to enter the elite list?

Nahid Rana vs 5 greatest Test bowlers after 12 matches: What do the numbers tell?

The five greatest fast bowlers in the history of Test cricket are James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Glenn McGrath, Courtney Walsh and Dale Steyn. If we take their numbers from the first 12 Tests, Dale Steyn had the most wickets, while James Anderson and Stuart Broad managed the joint-least number of scalps. 

Among Test cricket's five greatest pacers, Dale Steyn is the only bowler to register a strike rate of less than 50 after the first 12 games. And quite interestingly, Nahid Rana has replicated the feat in the modern-day game, highlighting his knack for scalping crucial breakthroughs. 

Despite conceding runs at a slightly higher economy rate than the top 5 pacers, Nahid has been impressive with his wicket-taking ability, taking only 48.2 deliveries per dismissal in Tests.

The home vs away bifurcation reveals a clear picture

James Anderson, statistically the most successful pacer in Test history, had a majority of his scalps on home soil in his first 12 Test matches. While Stuart Broad had an evenly distributed home-away dismissal graph, Glenn McGrath, Courtney Walsh and Dale Steyn excelled more overseas than on home turf. 

On the other hand, Nahid Rana has been incredible at home, with 23 wickets under his belt at a magnificent strike rate of 42.9. However, there's scope for improvement in his numbers in away Tests, as Nahid has 15 scalps, averaging 41.6 and striking at 56.4. 

Thus, although the Bangladesh speedster has proven himself as a game-changer at home, the numbers highlight his shortcomings, urging for improvement in overseas Tests. 

Nahid Rana has shown sparks, but that's not enough to enter the greats' category

Nahid Rana has pace, can hit the deck hard and generate substantial seam movement off the pitch. Still, he has yet to prove his mettle in overseas conditions, unlike some of the aforementioned talismans. 

Apart from his overseas record, another factor that could prevent Nahid Rana from entering the greatest fast bowlers' list is his performance against the top sides.

The data presented in the above table shows that Nahid Rana has bagged 60.52 per cent of his total wickets against Pakistan and West Indies, the two lowest-ranked teams in the WTC 2025-27 points table. 

While he has the talent to become one of Bangladesh's greats in Test cricket, Nahid has yet to shine against the higher-ranked Test teams- India, South Africa and Sri Lanka. Moreover, he hasn't played a single Test against marquee teams like Australia, England and New Zealand. 

Apart from his performance against the top teams, the factors that could hinder Nahid's rise in Tests are his fitness and Bangladesh's relatively smaller number of fixtures than the other countries. 

Despite a topsy-turvy start to his Test career, James Anderson went on to become the leading wicket-taker, as he kept himself fit to play the longest format until he turned 41. The same logic applies to Stuart Broad, Courtney Walsh and Glenn McGrath, who played 167, 124 and 132 Test matches, respectively. 

Added to that, Bangladesh play relatively fewer Tests than the other full-member teams. Since the inception of WTC, the Tigers have played 45 Tests, 41 fewer than England. 

In the same period, India, Australia and New Zealand have played 66, 62 and 54 Tests, respectively, while West Indies, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have played more matches than Bangladesh. 

So, there are more questions than answers as far as the possibility of Nahid Rana's entry into the list of greats is concerned. He has shown the sparks, but the aforementioned challenges could just prevent him from living up to his potential to the fullest.
