India were brilliant with their combination in Asian Games semifinal [PC: BCCI/X]Every time India take the field these days, their playing XI becomes a major talking point. Such is the extent of the debate that it can sometimes overshadow the actual proceedings on the field.A similar theme followed when India’s playing XI for their Asian Games 2026 semifinal clash was announced after the toss. As is often the case lately, a few surprises and the overall combination sparked plenty of debate, even with Gautam Gambhir not at the helm for this particular tournament. How India smartly played a terrific combination in the Asian Games 2026 semifinalAt times, India have gone overboard with their obsession with batting depth across formats over the last couple of years. They have consistently played a bowler short, asking their batters to do the heavy lifting. That happened again in the Asian Games 2026 semifinal.Except this time, it was a smart move, backed by sound cricketing logic. India went in with all-rounders as low as No.9, leaving them with only two specialist bowlers: Ravi Bishnoi and Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah was also the only specialist pacer, with Shivam Dube providing the other seam option. The conditions in Nisshin were far from ideal for batting, with the pitch behaving unpredictably, especially when the spinners came into play. The slow bowlers found plenty of turn from the outset, while deliveries landing in one of the many cracks generated excessive bounce and carry. Also Read: India Book Date With Pakistan In Asian Games 2026 Final For GoldIndia therefore smartly picked three of the four spinners in their squad, including Axar Patel and Washington Sundar. They not only provided the necessary spin overs but also added considerable batting depth. And on a pitch like this, India didn’t really need too many pacers.Bumrah alone was enough to handle the pace department, and he did exactly that. He took the new ball and produced two crucial breakthroughs in the very first over. After bowling just two early overs, he wasn’t required again as the spinners wrapped up the rest of the innings. The Vaibhav Sooryavanshi moveHow Ishan Kishan and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi played a massive roleOne reason India opted to play a bowler short was to accommodate Vaibhav Sooryavanshi at the top. They understood that winning on this pitch required putting an above-par total on the board. Sri Lanka were far from full strength, and batting was not their biggest strength either.Sri Lanka were always going to rely on their spinners to restrict India and give their batters a modest target to chase. India, therefore, deliberately chose two explosive openers, Vaibhav and Abhishek Sharma, pushing Sanju Samson down to No.3.While Abhishek departed early, Vaibhav delivered exactly what India needed and justified his place in the XI. He smashed a quickfire 38 at a strike rate of 180.95, helping India make the most of the powerplay at a time when batting was difficult throughout the game.He used his unorthodox technique and exceptional bat speed to generate immense power and exploit the fielding restrictions. Once Vaibhav provided that kind of start, India were always ahead.Sony Sports Network @SonySportsNetwk 𝐅𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐋𝐄𝐒𝐒. 𝐅𝐋𝐀𝐌𝐁𝐎𝐘𝐀𝐍𝐓. Oct 1, 2026, 10:59 AM He is the kind of player who can make a difference on non-flat decks, even if the common perception is exactly the opposite. At times, Vaibhav’s methods have worked because he takes the pitch out of the equation with his constant movement in the crease and immense power off his base. He also did a similar job in Zimbabwe earlier, where the pitches were also far from easy-going.Sri Lanka did stage a mini-comeback later in the innings, as was always on the cards. After the match, Axar Patel confirmed that India were targeting a first-innings total of around 140. Their batting-heavy approach and the decision to include Vaibhav at the top paid dividends, as India out-batted Sri Lanka. The smart batting rotationsIndia's batting order in Asian Games 2026 semifinalAnother smart aspect of India’s tactics was how they lined up their batters. They started with two southpaws at the top, followed by Samson. Once Abhishek and Samson departed, India maintained the RHB-LHB combination by sending Shreyas Iyer at No.4.They had to delay Ishan Kishan, who usually bats at No.3, but didn’t shy away from such a drastic move. Once Vaibhav, an LHB, got out, India sent Kishan in at No.5. He still went on to play a magnificent knock. Then came another sharp move. After Iyer got out, Tilak Varma didn't come in at No.6. Instead, Axar Patel was promoted, a rare occurrence over the last couple of years. With spinners operating in tandem, India needed a spin-hitter who could provide big shots and handle the slow bowlers effectively.Axar was their designated spin-hitter and often acted as a floater in the middle overs under Rahul Dravid. That role has been reduced drastically in the last couple of years, with Axar rarely promoted up the order in T20Is. But here, it was the right move.Tilak has obvious issues against spin, averaging 22.72 at a strike rate of 106.38 against them this year. His problems are even more pronounced against off-spin. He strikes at just 96 against off-spinners and plays around 44% dot balls.Sony Sports Network @SonySportsNetwk 𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐊𝐈 𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐊𝐄𝐓 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐌𝐄𝐃! ✨ After completely blowing away Sri Lanka for just 45 runs, Team India march into the Final for a massive clash against arch-rivals Pakistan! 💥 Watch the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 LIVE on Sony Sports Network TV Oct 1, 2026, 2:03 PM Sri Lanka’s spinners were therefore always likely to trouble him, especially on such a sluggish deck. Axar was promoted to shield Tilak from that challenge. That he couldn’t fire was a different matter altogether, but the thought process was spot-on.Eventually, India’s tactical brilliance, from their batting-heavy combination to their constant reshuffling of the batting order, helped them post 169/7 in the first innings. That score meant Sri Lanka were never really in the game, and the contest was largely over even before the second innings began. Four spinners and Jasprit Bumrah completed the formality, helping India storm into the Asian Games 2026 final. Also Read: Sri Lanka's Lowest Scores In T20Is- India Drubbing Leads To New Low
