South Africa scripted history as they defeated Australia to clinch the 3-match series, 2-1. The Temba Bavuma-led side lost the first Test, but the reigning WTC champions roared back to win the next two games.

The win has helped the Proteas strengthen their position in the WTC points table, as they move to the second spot, with Australia dropping down to three, and India at 4.

Interestingly, South Africa’s victory has not only complicated things for Australia but for India as well. The Shubman Gill-led side has 7 Tests remaining, and their path to the WTC final has become a bit more complicated.

(Updated WTC points table)

  • Currently, India is placed 4th in the WTC points table, with a PCT of 51.52, and from here on, if India is to reach the WTC finals, they need to be near-flawless in their match results.
  • South Africa’s next two series are at home against Bangladesh and England, and if the Proteas defeat them, they will qualify for the finals. That leaves India, Australia, and New Zealand fighting for the second spot.
  • For India to strengthen their case, they need to beat the Kiwis in their upcoming two-match Test series, and that would take their PCT to 58.97. However, if India lose the two Tests, the PCT will drop to 43.59, which could seemingly end their WTC final dream.
  • Even if India lose against New Zealand and beat Australia, 5-0 at home, that still wouldn’t be enough to reach the finals as their PCT would only be 59.26, and they would have to depend on other results.
  • Six wins out of the remaining seven will take their PCT to 64.81, and even that might not be enough to secure a place in the finals. Hence, the Asian side would hope to win seven out of seven, or at least win six and hope the other results go in their favour.
