Speculations surrounding captain Hardik Pandya's ouster from Mumbai Indians (MI) have intensified in the ongoing IPL 2026. The move has been followed by multiple reports about uncertainty around his future with the franchise, especially since MI’s elimination from the IPL 2026 playoff race.
The franchise has been under scrutiny ever since Hardik Pandya was brought back into the MI set-up before IPL 2024. The sensational return from Gujarat Titans in an all-cash trade ended his two-year stint as captain of the Ahmedabad-based franchise. The deal saw him return to his roots, where he was immediately appointed captain, replacing Rohit Sharma.
The high-profile trade, filled with optimism, could seem a disaster at first glance, as the MI captain has since failed as a leader and an all-rounder for the franchise.
However, in this article, we take a look at why MI will not let go of Hardik Pandya in IPL 2027.
Decoding 3 reasons why Mumbai Indians can't afford to let of Hardik Pandya at any cost
3. Mumbai Indians’ think-tank knows him in and out
The Indians discovered a rookie Hardik Pandya in 2015 through their scouting network, led by John Wright, who spotted him playing in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy for Baroda. Impressed by his all-round prowess, MI signed him for the upcoming IPL 2015.
He was unearthed as a raw, explosive talent before becoming a core pillar of their four title wins (2015, 2017, 2019, 2020).

Today, the world acknowledges Hardik as one of the finest white-ball all-rounders in the game, all thanks to the MI think tank. In an interview, the player himself emphasised that he was a pure batter coming into the set-up, but the MI management transformed him into a match-winning allrounder.
The five-time IPL-winning franchise has, from the start, discovered and strengthened the potential that even Hardik was unaware of. Thus, safe to say that the MI think-tank is well aware of the talent he carries and what he can achieve if trusted and backed.
2. Proven match-winning credentials in clutch moments for India
Pandya’s individual performance in recent seasons has not been upto the mark in the Indian Premier League. Talking about his run in the IPL 2026, in eight innings with the bat, he has accumulated 146 runs with a best of 40, scoring at a strike rate of 136.44.
Meanwhile, with the ball, Hardik has managed four wickets at an economy rate of 11.90. Even for a squad player, those returns would be questioned.
That being said, Hardik Pandya remains a proven match-winner for the senior Indian Cricket Team. Widely regarded as one of the best white-ball all-rounders in the world, his impact in T20Is is particularly worth noting with the ball and the bat.

Since his India debut on January 26, 2016, Hardik has been a premier all-rounder for the national team, winning games on his merit time and again. Known for his crucial performances in high-pressure games, he has played a key role in India’s recent ICC tournaments, especially the back-to-back T20 World Cup title campaigns in 2024 and 2026.
As a player, Hardik cannot be doubted. Thus, the IPL franchise, MI, would be letting go of one of the best all-rounders in history.
1. No certain captaincy options till the next mega auction
One cannot look past the fact that Mumbai Indians, at present, do not have a player who could replace Hardik as captain in the long term. The management may look towards the likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and maybe even Rohit Sharma.
However, all three of them are fast approaching the dawn of their career and are very injury-prone. Thus, the franchise will have to find a young player whom they can nurture into the future leader.
That said, the team cannot afford to release the 32-year-old match-winner, Hardik Pandya, until the next mega auction, when they can acquire a trustworthy leader with some time in their hand.
