The ongoing Afghanistan Tour of India marks the beginning of India’s buildup for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which is still 15 months away.
Before the coveted tournament, India will play at least 15 ODIs, including 3 matches each against Afghanistan, England, West Indies, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe, as well as a tentative series against New Zealand to finalise their World Cup combinations.
However, at the moment, there are quite a few missing pieces to the ODI puzzle.
Thus, below in this article, let’s explore three aspects India will be looking to correct for the 2027 World Cup.
3 Things India Should Be Testing Against Afghanistan
1) India’s trial and error with hit-the-deck bowlers
For the unversed, the 2027 ODI World Cup will be jointly hosted in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Thus, India’s strategy focuses on grooming tall, pace-heavy "hit-the-deck" bowlers capable of exploiting bouncy tracks.
Bowling coach Morne Morkel is prioritising options like a 6'5" tall Gurnoor Brar, Prince Yadav, and Harshit Rana in white-ball series to build a potent pace arsenal.
2) Identifying RO-KO replacements
Another step involves a gradual transition from veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli rather than a direct replacement. While the BCCI still views Rohit and Virat as automatic selections, selectors are proactively grooming Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, and Ruturaj Gaikwad to form the future batting core.

Apart from that, the team management is also utilising Nitish Kumar Reddy, a like-for-like replacement for the injury-prone Hardik Pandya in the format, to provide the seam-bowling all-rounder depth needed for South African conditions.
3) Overall team combination a concern for a transitioning Indian ODI setup
Lastly, their primary concern is finding a reliable and stable middle-order for the bouncy pitches. Apart from that, the team is actively managing workloads for key seniors like Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya and transitioning to younger talents to address these challenges.
India’s ODI spin strategy for the 2027 World Cup also centres on building versatile spin-bowling all-rounders rather than traditional specialist spinners.
With the tournament in bouncy conditions like those in South Africa, the team is focusing on multi-dimensional players who can strengthen the batting lineup, with Washington Sundar and Harsh Dubey emerging as top options.
Why India Must Use Afghanistan as an ODI Testing Ground
The ODI series against Afghanistan gives Indian selectors and team management the ideal testing ground for their strategy.
It allows India to build bench strength and experiment with team combinations against a formidable spin attack without the extreme pressure of a multi-nation ICC tournament.
While the immediate focus will be on winning the series, the team management will also use the opportunity to assess players and combinations for the future.
India will take on Afghanistan in the second ODI of the three-match series on Wednesday at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. After a convincing seven-wicket victory in the rain-affected opener, Shubman Gill-led India is looking to clinch the series with another win.
On the other hand, Afghanistan are hoping for a better all-round performance to keep their hopes alive in this series.
