That's all from this contest, folks! We hope you enjoyed our coverage. India Women won an enthralling WODI here against an in-form New Zealand side. Let's us see what happens in the second WODI on Sunday
For now, this is me, Arjun Bhalla, signing off on behalf of Ajay Pal Singh and Raju Khariya. CHEERS!
Deepti Sharma (POTM): "No, it is important to start well that sets the tone. That was the belief. With the ball, I had to pick wickets and score quick runs.
It is not a new bat, I played with it in the World Cup as well. But yes, enjoyed my time with the bat today.
From the beginning, our mindset was not to look at the scorecard but just follow our plans and we should be able to defend it.
(On Sophie Devine's run-out) It wasn't much, I just saw her outside the crease and decided to throw at the keeper, glad that it worked."
Player of the Match: Deepti Sharma
Smriti Mandhana (Indian Women Captain): "Definitely, it was a great win. It was a tough one and a half-month for us, but it was a great win for us. We felt pretty confident about defending this score from ball one. Saima was terrific, especially with Suzie's wicket. She's a special talent. She has been with us for one and a half month now as she was a travelling reserve. Really happy for her and hopefully it's the start of big things for her. Deepti is a star and she knows what she is doing. Radha chipped in really well too. The wicket assisted the slower bowlers."
Smart Saver of the Match: Saima Thakor
Great Striker of the Match: Shafali Verma
Apne Liye Apno Ke Liye Award: Deepti Sharma
Dream11 Gamechanger of the Match: Amelia Kerr
Sophie Devine (New Zealand Women Captain): "Look I thought we did a fantastic job to keep them down to that total. It looked like a 250-260 wicket. Despite Amelia's efforts, we lost too many wickets and went down.
I feel it was a great cricket wicket. All bowlers did a good job. At one stage, we looked like chasing 350-400 but we did well to pull things back.
Yeah, hopefully she (Amelia Kerr) is fine. Look we have had a good couple of days recently but it is not an excuse for this performance."
8:40 PM IST & Local Time: Time for post-match presentation...
Saima Thakor: "Thank you so much! I was patient, and this bunch was amazing; I guess that was my secret. Honestly, it was a flat wicket... it was a batter's paradise, but we bowled beautifully. I was genuinely visualising (Suzie Bates's) wicket yesterday night, and I am thankful it came. Jemimah spoke a lot (in the pre-match hurdle), but we go a long way back. She has seen me through my cricketing journey. No better person to get the cap."
8:22 PM IST & Local Time: India Women have defeated the T20 World Cup champions. They bowled out New Zealand for 168 in 40.4 overs. After opting to bat first, India were bowled out for 227 and then the bowlers stepped up to produce a magical display, successfully defending the total. Radha Yadav was the pick of the bowlers for the Women in Blue.
Earlier in the match, India won the toss and opted to bat first. Smriti Mandhana fell early but Yastika Bhatia did well to put on a partnership of 37 runs with Shafali Verma.
Shafali perished after hitting a string of boundaries. Dayalan Hemalatha was the next wicket to fall for India Women. Jemimah Rodrigues and debutant Tejal Hasabnis then steadied the ship with a partnership of 61 runs.
Hasabnis missed her half-century by 8 runs. Deepti Sharma contributed with a fine knock of 41. Amelia Kerr picked up four wickets while her sister Jess Kerr chipped in with three scalps. Eden Carson got two and Suzie Bates picked up a solitary wicket.
In reply, New Zealand Women got off to a shaky start, losing Suzie Bates in the second over. Georgia Plimmer hit a few boundaries before being dismissed by Deepti Sharma in the 10th over.
Sophie Devine was run-out in an unfortunate way. Lauren Down made 26 runs and looked to steady the ship but Radha Yadav got rid of her in the 19th over.
Brooke Halliday (39) and Maddy Green (31) tried to bring the visitors back in the contest but they too failed to get the spinners away.
Saima Thakor took advantage of the hold spinners had on the batters and removed Halliday to break the dangerous-looking partnership. Maddy Green was then run out via a direct-hit by Smriti Mandhana.
Amelia Kerr walked out to bat lower down the order as she was struggling with cramps and she was the last woman standing for the visitors as India bowled out New Zealand Women for 168, getting an easy win in the end and taking a 1-0 lead in the 3-match series. Stay tuned for the post-match presentation.
That should be it. TV umpire will have a look and it looks out. Yes, the replays confirm that the ball ricocheted off the bowler's hands and hits the stumps.
40.4 R Yadav to E Carson
W That would be it! A run-out at the non-striker's end, and that's it! India win the first WODI by 59 runs at Ahmedabad. Yadav bowls a freebie, a high full toss outside off, Carson drives it in the cover region. Her partner, Melie Kerr asks to rotate the strike but the batter gets late to respond to it. Tejal Hasabnis, at covers, gets sharp on the throw and Yadav collects it in a blink, before Carson could make it to the crease, Yadav whipped off the bails.
Eden Carson is the last batter walking out to bat for New Zealand.
