Shadley van Schalkwyk is a South African-born cricketer who represents the United States national team. A seasoned campaigner and versatile all-rounder, van Schalkwyk has built a career that spans continents — from South Africa’s domestic circuit to franchise leagues and, most recently, international cricket for the USA.
A product of Wynberg Boys’ High School, van Schalkwyk first made waves as part of his school’s 2006–07 tour of Pakistan. His early promise earned him selection for the South Africa Academy, where he honed his craft against quality opposition. He made his List A debut in 2008 for Western Province, and soon became a reliable performer for Free State and The Knights, featuring across formats with consistent all-round displays.
Over the years, he remained a familiar name in South African domestic cricket, appearing in multiple editions of the Africa T20 Cup between 2015 and 2019. In 2017, he was named in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stars squad for the inaugural T20 Global League, though the tournament’s cancellation delayed his first taste of major franchise cricket.
His career took a new turn in 2021 when he moved to the United States and joined the Seattle Thunderbolts in Minor League Cricket. His experience and adaptability soon caught the attention of Major League Cricket (MLC), leading to a contract with the Los Angeles Knight Riders in 2023.
The following year marked a major milestone — van Schalkwyk made his T20 International debut for the USA on 7 April 2024 against Canada. Bringing with him years of first-class experience and a calm, tactical approach, he now adds depth and leadership to a rapidly developing American cricket setup.
From the club fields of Cape Town to international arenas across the Atlantic, Shadley van Schalkwyk’s journey is a testament to persistence, professionalism, and the growing global footprint of modern cricket.
