Picked by the Chennai Super Kings, Mohit Sharma flourished under the leadership of MS Dhoni who made good use of him with both new and old balls. Sharma used his variations sparingly and was highly successful in the first two years of his IPL career picking up 20 wickets in his debut IPL season in 2013 and 23 in IPL 2014. He won the Purple Cap in 2014 by finishing as the highest wicket-taker in the tournament. Based on his successful stints in the IPL, Sharma also debuted for India in the limited-overs matches and also went on to play the ICC World Cup 2015 in Australia as one among three pace attacks chosen by the men in blue.
A two-year ban for CSK saw Sharma moving to Kings Xi Punjab where he could not find his rhythm well enough. Although he did not perform terribly, he could not reach his once-achieved level either in the Punjab team picking only 14, 13, 13 wickets in the next three seasons.
A string of poor performances was followed by his release from the KXIP franchise and CSK bought him back for the IPL 2019. However, the franchise could not fit him in the scheme of things and release him again before this year’s IPL. Sharma is not getting younger and the IPL 2020 may well be the final opportunity for him to show that he still has in him what it takes to survive in cricket's shortest format.
