A calm, composed opening batsman, Mark Stoneman is a professional cricketer for the Three Lions. Quite an underrated southpaw, he represented England in 11 Tests in 2017-18 before being abruptly dropped from the squad. Nevertheless, Stoneman has had a domestic career to remember amassing over 15000 runs across all formats.
The Newcastle-born opener first arrived at the domestic scene for Durham in 2007 making his first-class debut against Sussex. He had a forgettable debut scoring just 17 runs in a horrifying defeat by an innings and 102 runs. After a miserable time in the 2006 U-19 World Cup with England, Stoneman broke into the first team of Durham at the age of 20.
After spending over 10 years with Durham, Stoneman decided to pen down a contract with Surrey prior to the 2017 season that resulted in the England call-up for the Test series against the Men in Maroon. He was handed his much-awaited debut cap against Sri Lanka on August 17th, 2014.
On his debut for Surrey, the veteran struck 165 runs against Warwickshire in the Championship’s season opener. He had a breathtaking season which resulted in another callup for the 2017/18 Ashes series in Australia. A devastating Ashes series saw him lose his place in the English squad, returning back to the domestic circuit.
Stoneman also earned a brief run as a captain in the absence of Rory Burns and Ben Foakes in 2020. His continued presence at the top of the order for Surrey alongside Rory Burns has earned him a lot of praise in recent times. Currently, in the twilight of his career, he would be hoping to end a great domestic career on a high note.
