Having represented Hong Kong in the Under-19 World Cup at a tender age of 15, Mark Chapman currently plays for New Zealand. He is among those rare breeds of cricketers who have scored an ODI century in their ODI debut.
Born in Hong Kong to a Chinese mother and a Kiwi dad, Chapman has taken good strides in international cricket in the recent past, but has yet to secure his place in the New Zealand limited-overs set-up.
Mark Chapman’s T20I Career
Having started his cricket career in Hong Kong, which is yet to establish itself on the international circuit, Mark Chapman never really made a name for himself, despite reaching a significant landmark in his debut game. However, it was his consistent performances for Hong Kong that helped them gain promotion from Division Three to Division Two in 2011.
Chapman made his T20I debut for Hong Kong in their first appearance in the 2014 ICC World Twenty20, playing his maiden game on 16 March 2014 against Nepal.
Notably, he made history during the 2016 Asia Cup Qualifier by becoming the first batsman to be controversially run out at the non-striker's end in a T20I. The dismissal was carried out by Oman’s Aamir Kaleem.
In 2018, Chapman developed ambitions to represent New Zealand in the future, thus making himself unavailable for selection for the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier.
In February 2018, the left-handed batsman was added to New Zealand's T20I squad for the tri-series against Australia and England.
Possessing a Kiwi passport, on 13 February 2018, he made his T20I debut for New Zealand against England and became the sixth cricketer to play T20Is for two international teams.
Since then, he has become a prominent name in New Zealand’s white-ball squad.
In 2021, during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, Mark Chapman became the first player to score 50+ runs for two countries (New Zealand and Hong Kong) in T20Is.
In April 2023, he was selected for the T20I series against Pakistan. In the fifth T20I, he scored 104* and levelled the series 2-2, becoming the top scorer of the series and grabbing the Player of the Series award.
Mark Chapman’s ODI Career
Before moving to New Zealand, Mark Chapman played his first ODI for Hong Kong on November 16, 2015. Notably, in his maiden ODI, he scored 124 not out from 116 balls, becoming the first Hong Kong player to score an ODI century. With this, he also became the first player from an associate nation to score a century on his ODI debut.
Furthermore, on 28 February 2018, Chapman made his ODI debut for New Zealand against England. With that, he became the tenth cricketer to play ODIs for two international teams.
He was also part of the New Zealand ODI squad during the series against India earlier in 2020 and will look to continue racking up impressive performances in the near future if given a chance.
