Pakistan have always been known for producing the best pace bowlers. However, they have also produced some world-beating spinners, and Abrar Ahmed has the potential to become another world-beater. Known for an aggressive "head-tilt" or "head-nod" send-off gesture, Ahmed is an old-school believer who loves flighting the ball and has spectral variations.
Born in Karachi, 16-year-old Ahmed was touted as the next-generation star for Pakistan for his unorthodox variations of leg-spin, googly, and flipper. The spinner’s journey started in 2014 at the academy level, before gradually moving to the club and district level for his region. He was handpicked to play for Karachi Under-19s and later for his state’s senior team.
Abrar Ahmed PSL Career
In 2017, the Karachi Kings management called in Abrar Ahmed for the trials. The spinner was picked to make his T20 debut for the franchise in the 2017 Pakistan Super League (PSL). However, just two games into his career, he suffered a back injury, forcing him to miss cricket for a whole year.
A fitter and a stronger Ahmed returned to Pakistan’s domestic circles and bowled impeccably for Sindh. He made his List A and Second Division debuts in the 2020 season, before making his first-class debut in the 2020 season of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, where he picked up 16 wickets from five games.
For PSL 2021, the Karachi-born spinner was drafted into the Peshawar Zalmi squad. The spinner didn’t get opportunities before the PSL got suspended in March.
For the PSL 2023, Ahmed was drafted by Islamabad United and by Quetta Gladiators for the 2024 edition.
Abrar Ahmed Test Career
After probing his mettle on the domestic stage, Abrar Ahmed made his international debut for Pakistan on December 9, 2022, against England in Multan in the second Test of the series. Notably, he took 7/114 in the first innings and finished with 11 wickets in the match.
The leg-spinner became the first Pakistani bowler since 1995 to take a ten-wicket haul on debut.
In the very next Test series against New Zealand, he picked up another 5-wicket haul in the first innings of the first Test.
Abrar Ahmed T20I Career
Fast forward to April 18, 2024, when Abrar Ahmed made his T20I debut for Pakistan against New Zealand in Rawalpindi. The mystery spinner had an impressive start, taking two wickets in his first match, showcasing his ability to strike early.
In May 2024, he was also named in Pakistan's squad for the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup tournament.
Abrar made it to the spotlight for his performances in the Asia Cup T20 2025. He was remarked as an elite, economical bowler, and his bowling against Sri Lanka was highly applauded. He produced a remarkable spell of 4–0–8–1 (econ 2.00) with 16 dot balls, the most economical four-over spell by a spinner in T20 Asia Cup history. Moreover, he famously clean-bowled Wanindu Hasaranga and mimicked his celebration.
Abrar Ahmed ODI Career
Similar to his debuts in the other formats, Abrar Ahmed made a sensational debut in the One Day Internationals for Pakistan. Playing maiden ODI on November 26, 2024, against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, Ahmed took 4/33 in 8 overs, becoming just the second Pakistani spinner to claim a 4-wicket haul in their first ODI.
In November 2025, the mystery spinner, Abrar, produced a career-best performance of 4/27 against South Africa, securing a 2-1 series win.
