Pakistan have taken the lead in this three-match T20I series, and the action returns to Rawalpindi on Sunday for the second game. Do join us for that one!
A day for the openers here in Rawalpindi! Lahiru Udara (91) and Sahibzada Farhan (89) were the standout batters for their respective sides. However, the dew factor and some ordinary bowling from Sri Lanka made the run chase a relatively comfortable one for the hosts, who got the job done with four wickets to spare.
Kusal Mendis (Sri Lanka Captain): "(Was 180 enough on this track?) I don't think 180 was enough. On this kind of pitch, we probably needed 200-plus, or even around 220 runs. Yes, of course. Kamil and I got out early, and I think we needed to play a little more positively and score more runs in the powerplay. Losing those wickets early was an issue, and we struggled in the middle overs.
(On Lahiru Udara's knock) Of course, he batted really well. He handled the innings brilliantly through both the powerplay and the middle overs. I really enjoyed watching his innings, and I hope he continues batting well in the next match and throughout the tournament.
(On side's bowling performance) I think we bowled really badly in the powerplay. That's why the opposition batters were able to bat so well, including after the powerplay. We need to bowl more tightly during those six overs and take wickets in the middle overs. We have to improve our powerplay bowling because the opposition batted really well today."
Sahibzada Farhan (Pakistan Captain & POTM): "(On the side's batting approach) Absolutely. As I said earlier, as captain, I was very confident in my players, and they delivered exactly as expected. Fakhar gave us a great start, and then Maaz supported me later on. I think this is how we want to approach T20 cricket, and we will continue playing in the same manner.
(On pulling things back in the middle overs) I think we did reasonably well in the middle overs. Our powerplay was excellent, but we conceded a few more runs than we would have liked in the middle phase. However, that's how T20 cricket works — sometimes things go your way, and sometimes they don't. Still, I think 180 was a good score on this pitch.
(On Maaz Sadaqat continuing his CPL form) I think Maaz is in such good form that he is currently one of the best players around. I told him to make the most of his form because opportunities like this don't come around all the time. I'm very happy with his performance as captain.
(On Imran Randhawa's performance on debut) I think he bowled amazingly well. We knew he was very good with the new ball because he has played a lot of domestic cricket and has plenty of experience. We had complete confidence in him, and he delivered."
Player of the Match: Sahibzada Farhan
Wicket of the Match: Naseem Shah (for dismissing Kusal Mendis)
