It was the start of the making of Short, as he forced his way into the Warriors' 50-over team for the 2017 JLT One-Day Cup and promptly smacked an impressive century as WA claimed the title. A month later, he made his Sheffield Shield debut against Tasmania.

Short made his debut against New Zealand in a T20I fixture on February 3rd, 2018. He was part of the record chase in T20 history Chasing 244 against New Zealand, Short played a blistering 76 run knock and helped Australia chased down the mammoth total.
With the presence of David Warner and Aaron Finch, cementing the opening slot in the limited-overs cricket has not been easy for Short. Owing to Short’s capabilities, nevertheless, the team management has been trying to fit the dasher in the middle-order and it will be interesting to see if he breaks into the Test team or not.
