Player Bio

Born in Chelsea, Middlesex, Gus Atkinson is a right-arm fast-medium quick and handy lower-order right-hand batter, who has had an astonishing rise for England.

During his debut series (ODIs and T20I) versus New Zealand, Atkinson stood out for his raw pace, which has been key to his quick ascent to the highest level after a breakthrough 2022-23 season. His exceptional performances, in the inaugural International League T20 and The Hundred, caught the attention of the national selectors, and they deemed him fit for rigors at the international level.

Despite turning out in only four County Championship and six T20 Blast matches for Surrey last summer, Atkinson was roped in by Desert Vipers for ILT20 2022-23 on the back of his talent.

Fortunately, for Atkinson, the Vipers shared the same analytical team as the Oval Invincibles in The Men’s Hundred 2023, which paved the way for a path-breaking campaign in the popular tournament. The determined cricketer made waves with 10 scalps in six games in Invincibles' title-winning run.

Atkinson earned a professional contract in 2017 after a string of impressive performances for Surrey's second XI team in the English summer of 2016. He managed to retain his spot in the side over the next two seasons without really threatening to break into the club's first-choice unit.

However, a fantastic century at No.7 against Worcestershire's second XI made his case strong. His bowling prowess and the mentioned knock allowed him to ultimately graduate to the senior domestic setup during early 2020.

Atkinson made a record-breaking Test debut in July 2024 at Lord’s, taking 12 wickets against the West Indies. He followed that with a maiden century and another five-wicket haul in the next Test against Sri Lanka, becoming only the third England player to achieve both in the same match at Lord’s. In December 2024, he took a Test hat-trick against New Zealand, the first by an Englishman since 2017.

He was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 1 crores in the IPL 2024 auction, but withdrew from the season to manage his workload in consultation with the ECB.

Gus Atkinson has quickly risen as one of England's most exciting fast-bowling talents. With record-breaking performances across formats and impressive consistency, he is shaping up to be a cornerstone of England’s future pace attack.
