Which Teams Are Yet To Be Beaten By Bangladesh In Test Cricket?

Bangladesh have just produced one of the most iconic wins against Australia after the conclusion of the AUS vs BAN 1st Test. As the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led team roared on foreign soil, they bagged yet another Test match victory against the Yellow Camp since 2017, making a total count of 2 wins against the team.

The Bengal Tigers are generally not known to be one of the Test giants in world cricket, and yet they have managed to achieve something that even teams like India and England have struggled to get past. 

As Bangladesh stand on the verge of an AUS vs BAN series win from the two-match Test series and a possible boost on the WTC points table, let’s take a look at which teams they have still not defeated yet in red-ball cricket.

Which teams did Bangladesh fail to conquer in Tests?

The Australian win from the Bengal Tigers was an unprecedented one, yet they pulled off one of the most dominant victories in the books of Test cricket. However, out of the 11 teams they have faced in red-ball cricket, there remain two who are still undefeated by Bangladesh.

India

The very first team is India. Bangladesh played 15 matches against the Men in Blue, with two matches ending in a draw and the other 13 won by India. The closest Bangladesh ever got to a win against India was back in 2022.

In India's tour of Bangladesh in December 2022, during the second Test, India, led by KL Rahul, was almost on the verge of suffering a massive defeat at the hands of the hosts in Dhaka. 

After Bangladesh posted 227 runs in their first innings, India took an 87-run lead. Bangladesh followed up brilliantly in the second innings to set India a target of 144 runs, with Axar Patel taking three wickets, while Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Siraj picked up two wickets each to help India bowl Bangladesh out inside 71 overs.

However, the modest target of 144 runs soon seemed like a massive challenge for the visitors, as India lost five wickets for just 56 runs inside 25 overs. Soon enough, India had lost seven wickets inside 30 overs, with the team still requiring 70 runs to win. Mehidy Hasan Miraz was the orchestrator of India's struggle, picking up a five-wicket haul.

However, Shreyas Iyer and Ravichandran Ashwin remained unbeaten at the crease and played a valiant knock to rescue India. Ashwin scored 42 runs, while Iyer contributed 29, as India eventually secured a thrilling three-wicket victory.

When is Bangladesh’s next Test match against India?

Bangladesh last played a Test match against India back in September 2024. Since then, due to political unrest and diplomatic strains since the T20 World Cup 2026, the Bengal Tigers haven’t been in engaging terms with the BCCI.

However, the latest developments indicate a bilateral ODI and T20I series between them to be arranged in 2026 itself. With India’s cricketing calendar packed for the year-end, it is very much unlikely that they can squeeze in a Test series this year.

Hence, if there’s a possibility, the India vs Bangladesh Test series might occur in 2027, but definitely not before that.

South Africa

Against South Africa, Bangladesh have played 16 matches, with two ending in draws, while South Africa won the remaining 14 by significant margins. The Proteas have largely dominated Bangladesh in the majority of their encounters.

The closest Bangladesh came to defeating the Proteas was at home in Mirpur during South Africa's tour of Bangladesh in 2008. Led by then-captain Mohammad Ashraful, Bangladesh batted first and posted a modest total of 192 runs, with contributions from Aftab Ahmed and Shakib Al Hasan. 

South Africa endured a poor outing in their first innings, as they were bowled out for just 170 runs, failing to take a lead over Bangladesh. Shahadat Hossain ran riot with a six-wicket haul, dismantling the Proteas' top and middle order.

Bangladesh's second innings was not particularly impressive with the bat either, as they managed to score just 182 runs, setting South Africa a target of 205. 

The visitors made a decent start, although Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie fell inside 34 overs. However, AB de Villiers and Mark Boucher remained unbeaten to guide South Africa to victory, completing the target with five wickets in hand.

When is Bangladesh’s next Test match against South Africa?

Interestingly, Bangladesh will have a chance to break South Africa's unbeaten streak against the Bengal Tigers in November 2026. 

After South Africa hosts Australia for a red-ball and white-ball cricket series in October, the Proteas will host Bangladesh for another red-ball and white-ball tour. 

Bangladesh will next face South Africa on November 15, 2026, in the first Test in Johannesburg as part of a two-match Test series. The second Test will be played in Centurion on November 23.
